I have a 1996 GMC Jimmy 4x4 V6, my trans is gone and I would like to know if I must used a 96-97 trans as a replacement? If possible what other years will what?

when i saw tranny question, i was going to say look for the adam's apple.

Best to check salvage yard interchange book.
Other years may work but may need rewired or valve body changes.
Always stay with the same size transmission and 4W and same transmission/engine match.

If I remember right, you gotta stick with the 95-96 bucause of the computer BS. That was the years that Chevy used the OBD1.5 so to say. The inbetween years from OBD I to OBD II. Good luck m8.

if i remember right, 94-96 used a different valve body than the rest. yes, i know 94 is the old body style. but its still a 4l60e. i believe 97 or 98 they changed the valve body again to incorperate a pwm valvebody. not interchangable with each other. i rebuilt my 4l60e. the hardest part was physicly removing the damn thing. the top left bolt was nearly impossible to get at.
