Cold Idle Speed

99 Rodeo 3.2 4x4 auto.
Starts fine, cold idle speeds up to 2500 rpm and stays there until engine reaches operating temp. Sometimes 5 minutes, at which time it gradualy drops down to 800 rpm. Works perfect after that until the next cold start.
The really strange thing is that if the engine is not allowed to idle in park or neutral until warmup the idle speed will not drop down to normal.
If you drive off with a high idle it will not return to normal until the car is left to idle in park or neutral.
Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone out there had this problem?

Yes, a very common problem (my 1997 3.2 had symptoms exactly as you describe).
