Brake system gone haywire

I am having the stranges problem with my 1998 Buick Regal GS with 143000 miles. When starting my car after sitting over night or for a while everything is fine. If the car has been driven and then shut off for a short period or right away, upon putting the car in gear and moving a few feet forward, the anti-lock brake control module turns on the pump motor and then the Anti-Lock, Trac Control, Brake, and service engine soon light comes on. When this happens, it feel like the brakes are being lightly applied and if you take you foot of the accelerater the car will come to a stop. I try a code reader from Autozone but there are no codes. Help!!!!

You need to take the car to someone with an ABS capable scanner. The scanner from Autozone won't read these codes. There is a possibility you have a bad ABS sensor, which is part of the wheel hub assembly, but it will be best to scan the computer to see what is actually going on. This will save both time and money.

I think the abs wheel sensor is in the bering.
If you have a cheep aftermarket bearing in there it will do as you describe.
I get the same thing then I start to hear the squeal in the bearings.

I have to change the fronts in my car soon.
Your brakes still work fine when that light comes on.

A bad wheel sensor in any of the 4 hub bearings could cause the symptoms but it sounds more like the ABS system is failing initialization. Normally wheel sensor output isn't check until the car reaches around 10 mph/16km/h.

The first part of the initialization sequence cycles each solenoid valve and the pump motor, as well as the necessary relays, for approximately 1.5 seconds to check component operation. The EBTCM (Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module) sets a DTC if any error is detected and then triggers the respective warning lights.

This vehicle needs to be scanned with an ABS capable scanner as pointed out preferably a GM Tech II since the ABS initialization sequence can be properly commanded and checked with it. :2cents:

Thanks for all the info guys, I think I may have to take it somewhere. Ok this is something I found out last night. I also have a bad heater blower motor. Bearing are making a god awful noise. So yesterday at work I got fed up, tried to get to the moter but it was too difficult without the right tool so I pulled the blower motor fuse. Wouldn't you know the brakes have not acted up since. Since they have nothing to do with each other I thought, this is crazy so I put the fuse back in for the heater blower. Soon as got my car in gear and start to go damm brake lights, ABS, TRac Control and Service eng lights back on and brake are clamping down again. Try turn the car and retry several time then with the fuse for the blower. Fuse in the blower Brakes go bizzerk, fuse out brakes are fine. So as you can see, I think I have no chose but to bow down to the repair shop. :shakehead
