Here's the deal...
My car started making a funny noise off & on like the CV joint might b goin. Then a couple days ago when I left in the morning it made a grinding/squeeking sounds as i left my driveway. Then halfway to work (about 30min) it started pulling to the right whenever i stepped on the gas & making a thumping sound & vibration kinda like when u change lanes over the dots in the road. The weird thing is it only does this after driving 10-15 min & only when i have the gas on.... while coasting, nothing. Anyway... last nite i checked everything under the front & nothing (boots r fine, no leaks). Only thing is my tranny was really low on oil (but it's never leaked) & when i jiggle my axles near the tranny it makes a clicking noise where they enter..

Sorry 4 the long post but I'm tryin 2 give all the info I have..
Is my tranny on it's way out????? Will my axles work with any D series tranny?

If it is.... does anyone have one 4 real cheap.... i don't care what kind, cause rite now i have a 4spd.

Look at the boots on your axels, are they torn? If so then the axel is probably bad. When my axel went bad it would pull the direction of that axel. Replacing one is easy...

The boots r fine, that's what stumps me.
I just went to lunch & it's making crackle/pop noises when i turn but the other problems didn't happen. The other issues start after i drive it for a little while.... which sucks cause i have a 106mi commute each day to work... i'm afraid i'm gonna get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

wow, i don't know much on this one. but i do know about commutes. not fun when you don't trust the car.

you asked if your axels will work with an d series tranny. the only axels with different # of splines is the 88 std.

are there any other symptoms that leads you to think it's the tranny? grinding when you shift? hard to get into gear?

The only reason i think it might b the tranny is cause it was so low on oil & when i filled it up the oil i checked it with my finger & it had a little bit of silver in it....but otherwise it's fine no grinding or probs shifting.

The reason i asked about the tranny changing is cause mine used to b auto & now it has a 4spd & D15 engine & i'm not sure what year it is or what it's out of. So if i have a 4spd now I can put in a 5spd DX or SI?

since you say 4 speed i assume the worst...its an 88 std. if that is the case then you will need new axels.

in all honesty you can probably find the dx tranny and axels cheap. someone might even just give it to you if you take it away, lol. however, if you can....i would say get the Si. hands down. i understand when you have to replace these types of things without warning it's easier said than done. i'm just saying if you do need to replace your tranny...try to hold out for the Si. it will not make a night and day difference. however, you'll enjoy your commute a little more.

i'll take anything cheap that works good..... i dont care about DX or SI
The way things r goin my poor car will be 20 before i can put in a real engine.

Damn, took me a while to find this post lol ... anyways, I say you go out to the place in american canyon or fairfield pick and pull to get the stuff ... oh and you can have my DX tranny if you get me and si one :hehe: yea right like that would happen

Anyways, I feel you on the mods, I been talking about stuff I wanted to do for so long, and if I had a better job in high school with more hours I might have been able to pull off the following by now

Tint
Header
MPFI
New Seats

Anyways, at least I finally got the alarm so I can rest easier at night. I feel you on the commuting too, I got 80 miles round trip to heald, not quite as much as you but still substantial.

Whats the easiest way to tell how many splines i have on my axles? Do i have to take them off? On new axles it says there should be a colored stripe.... where is it located? I think i'm gonna try new axles for my problem. It only makes noise when i give it gas... there's like a grinding noise when i take off & when i go around corners it makes a knocking sound only when i give it gas as soon as i let off it makes no noise. i found some for $70 a piece, is that a good deal or does someone know where i can get them cheaper?

it sounds like the inner cv joint is out.......

I'm pretty sure all the inner splines are the same, but for the outer STD had 23 splines and DX and Si had 26.

so if i have a 4spd then i should have 23...rite
does anyone know if the autos had 23 splines also...if so.... that would explain why the guy put a 4spd in after the conversion instead of a 5spd.
