Problem with the Chevy 3100 engine

Hey

The 3100 engine is known to make a ticking sound, especially when it's cold. I've learnt to accept that it's due to poor design. However, I was wondering if that design flaw causes the engine to misfire at high RPM occasionally. I was testing the Buick Century 3.1L today and when the pedal is all the way down and I hold it down, you hear a "BANG" that comes out of the exhaust every 3-5 seconds. What do you think is the problem?

Best regards,
IK

If the ticking is a collapsing (or out of adjustment) lifter, and if its not opening a valve properly, it can cause a backfire.
