what happened to my tamiya putty???

alright, so im working on my new project, and i go to use my tamiya polyesther putty...

when i try to squirt out a line of the white putty, a VERY nasty liquid comes out along with a bit of the white putty. the liquid is kind of oily, and it has a brown / tan color to it. it looks like the putty has broken down in the tube. the stuff is only a couple months old... very odd...

has anyone else had anything like this happen to them? or does anyone have an explanation for it???

kinda pissed me off since this was only the 3rd or 4th time i had used the putty and it was still pretty full. i had to toss it out, since it was basically unusable... now i gotta go and spend another 11 bucks on a new set... dammit.

Yeah, any type of epoxy glue/putty goes bad pretty quickly. Sorry to hear that, on the instructions for my Tamiya epoxy putty it says "Use unsealed putty as soon as possible" which gives you an idea on how volatile these putties are.

too bad everything on the tube and package was written in japanese (with the exception being the "Tamiya Polyesther Putty" title).

had i known, i would have used it a LOT faster.

I think that liquid is normal... just squirt out some more until the white putty comes out... the oily stuff might be there to protect the putty from drying out (i'm guessing here...) but I remember for my tube of putty just squeeze a bit more out until the putty comes.

I agree. I assumed it was just liquid that had seperated from the putty. I've not used the tamiya stuff, but i get the same thing with my Humbrol stuff. Its only a problem when its new, as you use it up its not so bad, i just squeeze it til the useable stuff comes out. I don't think u should have thrown it away, should be fine!

funny that you mention it that way... it was completely opposite for me. the putty was fine the first 3-4 times i used it, then this weirdness happened.

well, i also had to toss it because, after i discovered the oily junk in there, i thought "why not try to mix it up by squeezing the tube A LOT". basically i wore a tiny hole in the side, and it leaked... so i compounded my problem. doh!

LOL! That's what i do too! I've also poked in cocktails sticks in an attempt to mix it around.

That liquid is the polyester resin, the white stuff is a filler (usually fiberglass). It hasn't gone bad, just squeeze out a little more to even it out. Once you have a little room in the tube, just knead it around gently to mix it again. Gently, as I see some peopel did it a bit too rough. LOL

That happens to me all the time. It's normal. Just store it vertically and wait for a few days, and you'll find that thick putty will come out first.
