96 Golf Classic - Intermittent Trouble Starting Car: Suggestions Please?

Hi there,
I have a 96 Golf classic which is in great condition, very low kms etc.
However, recently I have begun to need to turn the key (and turn the engine over obviously) mulitiple times until the car finally starts. Sometimes I might need to do it three times, sometimes it starts straight away and sometimes it won't start after ten tries. I wait a while and then try again, when it usually starts.
I have taken the car to a volkswagen mechanic in Melbourne who checked the car out and basically told me they couldn't find a problem. He told me to make sure that I was with the RACV as the car would probably 'just not start' one day and I may need to get it towed. I was hoping for some more constructive advice than that. And I also intend to change mechanics! (I have also recently paid 1100 to have my a/c compressor replaced and it still doesn't work). Waiting for them to get back from hols.
Anyway, I am obviously one of those unfortunates who doesn't actually know a whole lot about cars, and I am looking for a bit of guidance.
Cheers.
