I have a 93 G/Caravan 3.3 I had the trani rebuilt about 100,000km ago. when it went it would lock it self into limp mode (the speedo still worked fine) last night I was driving and it seem to lock into limp mode again BUT the speedo dropped to almost 0 then jumped to 80km, (I was doing about 50km/h). I was a block from home so I drove it home and parked it. Today my wife told me the same story "seems to be stuck in 2nd and the speedo jumps all over". I just took it for a drive and everything seems fine I can see and feel it shift through all 4 gears and speedo reads normal. Any thoughts??? could a bad speed sensor cause this?? and does anyone know which of the 4 or 5 sensors on the trani, is the speed sensor? or is my trani. going south AGAIN!
Thanks in advance.
(p.s. yes, it's full of fluid)

We have had to replace/rebuild the tranny twice in our 91 grand caravan but you may be looking at the issue of a bad TPS instead of the tranny this time, given the speedo acting so strange. Is it throwing any codes? Is the check engine light on?

When was the last lilter and fluid change done? ATF+3 or ATF+4 fluid only.
Check all connectors to sensors and solenoid pack (SOlenoid pack connector tends to hold moisture in it, clean, dry and use electronic cleaner on connections and apply dielectric grease)
Make sure all grounds are shiny clean and tight. Clean battery terminals and cable ends to shiney clean.

The speedo jumping usually means output sensor is going south.

This link has a picture of component lications:

Check for codes by turning on/off, on/off/ on without starting engine. Check engine light will give codes. Example: flash, pause flash, flash = code 12. Post codes

Hope this helps and good luck

You cannot get transmission codes without tha special scanner. If there is a code you will just get a code that says "transmission problem" You could have a sensor problem. It's difficult to say. The TPS will not effect transmission operation, unless you mean speed sensor. The 4 spd does not have the speed sensor that other Chrysler products have. It uses an output speed sensor on the transaxle. If this is bad the speedometer will not work. If the input speed sensor is bad the trans will go into limp. also if there is a problem with the PNDL switch. There can also be a problem with the solenoid pack too. However, the solenoid pack can be rebuilt now for about $22 for the kit.

A big thing to look at is the type of fluid. If the rebuilder used
Dextron you need to change it immediately to ATF+4. It is available at Walmart for $4.45/qt. This will fix some problems by itself. You will be garranteed to destroy the trans in short time with the wrong fluid. Chrysler used ATF+3 in earlier transaxles and you can use that too, but ATF+4 is much better.

Not too many shops rebuild these transaxles correctly so they have a bad rep. that they are junk. However, when built correctly and have the correct fluid they will last well over 100,000 miles. The early ones had some weak parts but hopefully when they rebuilt yours they updated it.
