GTP needs help

Hi there new to the site. Im haveing troubels with my 99 GTP has the 3.8 sc I got gas this morn went for a drive went to work and when i came back out the car would start and then shut right back off. When the car does start it has very rough idel then shuts down. the only code kicked is the MAF. does any one know if that could be the problem or if it is something else??? any input would be great. Welcome to AF.

Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector and then see if the idle or driveability is back to normal. Doesn't hurt to disconnect the MAF sensor for testing purposes and may indicate a bad MAF sensor. Also, post the DTC code if you have it.

If you have a CAI/FWI sometimes cleaning the MAF wire element helps. Sometimes filter oil contaminates the wire element.

Use electrical contact or MAF spray cleaner only or in a worse case isopropyl alcohol gently with Q-tips.

I tried disconecting the MAF and the car started right up. And when i pluged it back in it shut down. Do you think i could get away with cleaning it?? Would it be ok to drive it home about a mile with that unpluged or do you think that would further hurt it?? Also it made a weird noise when starting it with that unpluged is that normal??? thank you again so much for your help. RPM

The P0101 DTC is a MAF range/performance problem. It wouldn't hurt to clean it first. If that doesn't work here is one reasonable parts source.

It won't hurt to drive it with the MAF disconnected for a few days or more. Maybe a slight loss in fuel economy and an erratic idle until the engine warms up. But at least you are not stranded.
