Broken Strut Tower

Big trouble with my '00 Eclipse.
The passenger side strut tower cracked and broke laterally around the entire mount. The entire strut is being forced up into the hood.
Does anyone know if there is a safe repair for this problem or is my car toast?
A mechanic told me that this is a fatal flaw with Mitsu products, is that so?
There is no other rust on the machine and all else is good mechanically, the mechanic told me that since this is basically a frame member that any repair may affect the handling and safety of the vehicle.
I have never seen this happen on a car so I am stuck on what to do. Any ideas out there?

Buy a new strut tower section from the factory and any good repair shop can cut out the old and weld the new one in... I fixed this on my 2g before it got to the point where it would break through. It's not totaled, just a good bit of work to fix...
