1996 Safari won't start

I have a 1997 GMC Safari w/ Vortec 4.3 v6. Since the cold weather, it has trouble starting until about the 7-8th attempt. I have changed the fuel filter and attempts to pump the gas make no significant outcome. Fuel pump cycles on during primary ignition. No smell of fuel, starting fluid does not help. When the vehicle runs for 30 minutes plus, there is no problem starting first time. The engines runs well with no problems until it sits a couple of hours and cools down. When cold (< 50 degrees) it is nearly impossible to get started. Placing ignition switch to the on position for a few seconds does not seem to yield better results than just turning the key to the start position immediately. I suspect something in primary ingnition circuit but I have not put a timing light on it to see if any spark was making it to the
plugs. Any idea? Where is the culprit part located?

I'd say you should look at the ignition wires. I don't know what your milage on the current set is but that's what it sounds like. Once your van warms up it dries out the moisture from the wires and it runs fine. I just changed mine on my 2002, I had the same problem. You might want to change your cap and rotor at the same time.

I agree, that's a good place to start. If that doesn't do it, check the fuel pressure and check for excessive leakdown. Key on, engine off, pump running, pressure must be 60 to 66psi. Pressure must remain above 55psi for 3 to 5 minutes after pump shuts off.
