i have a 96 s10 with the 4.3 V6 and the other day when i went to change the sparkplugs we took off the air intake and when i opened the butterfly valve i saw about a half an inch of hardened Black stuff... and i was wondering how to get it off..

Thanks

just spray some carb cleaner on a rag and wipe it out....its usually just carbon build up or dirt

For the bad carboned up ones carb cleaner or TBI cleaner and a old tooth brush works good.
Just like brushing your teeth.
Soak it and scrub and brush and wipe it away.
Good Luck

ok but question.. would it hurt it if i was to stick a screwdriver up under it and pry it out?

Half an inch would be an extremely abnormal amount of build-up and would certainly cause a lot of driveability issues. Are you sure that you're not seeing the air deflector which is supposed to attached to the underside of the butterfly?

well im still trying to figure this truck out.. so i didnt know there was an air deflector and if thats what it is than there is still build up on it

If it's just the deflector with a little carbon on it, then using the TB cleaner and toothbrush with it in place will be okay. If you are really see a large amount of carbon build up (enough to pry off with a screwdriver) I would recommend pulling the throttle body off and bench cleaning it to keep any large chunks from falling into the plenum.

I noticed on my throttle body that there is an air deflector is there really a need for it? if not is there a way i can take it off?

Since you did not post the year, ( chronic issue on all the forums) I assume it is a 96, no do not remove the deflector.

it is an 96 but the reason ask is because one of the things that hold it on popped off what can i do about that?

It is held on with rivets, but, there is also a bleed hole that is supposed to be open.

There are several threads in the forum claiming that removing the deflector improves performance, don't believe them, it is there for a reason.

i got a 96 s10 with the 4.3 Vortec and i was wondering why gm put an air deflector on the butterfly valve?

The main reason is to reduce throttle sensitivity so it's not so "jumpy" from a stop.

so if you were to take if off is it gonna hurt the engine?

No, it will not "hurt" the engine. Some claim it improves fuel mileage and performance. In the real world it only improves ego, but don't tell anyone ;)

so taking it off is fine but how would you fill in the holes?

The deflector is smooth with gradual curves so that airflow remains stable. Some throttle valves have holes that are supposed to be there. They allow a calculated amount of air through when the throttle valve is closed. Don't seal any of those holes, if equipped. Whatever you seal the rivet holes with, the end result must be as smooth as possible.
