99 RAV 4 valve damage

I inadvertantly ran the oil out of my RAV - oil sending unit went bad and leaked. Only 1000 miles since oil change so I didn't expect anything until I hear engine knock. By that time my dipstick was dry. Replaced the oil and the sending unit but I still have a knock. Some say replace bearings ($$) and others say just drive it. Anyone have advice?
