98 4x4 driver axle wont release from transfer case?

What could cause the axle to be stuck? I have the wheel bearing side removed already and out. The snap ring on the spline must be damaged or something. I am stuck and could really use some advice.

Put a block of wood against the inner CV joint and smack the wood with a good sized hammer, the joint and halfshaft will pop right out.
