difference between 4G63 in the Eclipse and EVO

Whats different with the 4G63 in the EVO thats giving it 278hp verse the 4G63 in the Eclipse thats giving it 210hp?? I'm looking to sell my "tricked out" RS and finally have a turbocharged vehicle by late 2008... Ofcourse I would LOVE to have an EVO... but.. $300+ montly payments for the next couple years isn't what i'm looking for. I can sell the RS and throw in a couple grand and have a payed for GSX... I mean the only major differences between the two vehicles that I know of is the 4 doors on the evo... the evo has a little more luxery interior..and ofcourse the 70hp difference.

The turbo is much bigger, a 16g with a 10cm turbine housing compared to the popular upgrade to an evo3 16g which is only a 7cm housing. The mivec in the IX's helps a lot. The head is different, different compression ratio, and a bunch of other different things. People still do the 2.4 swap with a 4g64 block and mivec or just a regular viii head makes some crazy power.

Evo has bigger injectors and better tuning, the car runs more boost stock and thats the main reason it makes more power.

Yea agreed its not so much the difference in the engine itself its in the things that surround it.

The only performance related internal differences I am aware of is the compression, pretty sure about cams, and I am sure the heads all flow different. Stock 6 bolts all have 7.8:1 compression ratio where the 2g has 8.5:1 and the Evo is 8.8:1. 1g cams are a step above 2g's and Evo cams are a step above the 1g's I'm pretty sure.

Wow.... Okay, An EVO cost around $20,000. I seem them cheaper with alot of miles, but I don't want to go there. I'm going to have about $70,000 worth of student loans to pay off pretty soon. So, I figured I would just look for a all black leather interior GSX, with less than 80k miles somewhere around florida for half the price of an EVO. Anyone have an estimate of what it would take to get the GSX to lets say... 350hp??

:werd: 350 hp is a well documented power goal, look around and you should find what you need. Your best bet is probably a 50 trim setup on E85 with DSMlink and all the support mods.

Be carefull comparing the size of the EVO turbine to other DSM turbos. The EVO turbine housing is twin scroll, so the 10.5cm number goes out the window, as far as comparing to regular turbine housings. ;)
The EVO has 2g sized internals and compression ratio, but it's extremely robust. 600 whp on stock motors is not at all uncommon. It also has a much improved combustion chamber design, and I think this is too often overlooked! The factory never could have put out a 1g or 2g with 270+ HP stock and still made money on them (warrantee) and passed US emissions.
The main contributors, or things that allow, the higher power level are the combustion chamber design, FMIC, cams, etc, not to mention a very robust drivetrain that can take the added power... If I haven't been able to break something in 3 full race seasons with my 05 RS, they did something right. ;)

How is the chamber that much different. I've seen the 1g and 2g heads side by side and they look identical to me, but they say the 2g desgin is better. Also i think the another major factor why they didn't add more horse power stock to these cars is it would have interfered with the sales of the 3000 gt vr4 which had the power. Now that there is no other turbo charged car made my mitsu they can use it as there trump card.

I never looked for the exact differences between them, if my feeble mind could even understand what I see, if there is even anything that can be "seen." The evidence is obvious though. Nice burn patterns on the pistons, ridiculous resistance to knock, lower emissions, etc.

Technology, Thats it. You think my 91 laser rs all wheel drive trubo was made around 12 years before the evos where even released in america. Now as i recall a first gen evo and my car are about the same. But a 3rd gen evo would eat mine alive due to advances that where not around when my car was made. so the answer is technology.
