so i bought a 97 Blazer, knowing it had a few minor problems, but then i noticed that the odometer is not working. it will roll slowly, like 1 mile to every 20 miles, maybe during braking or acceleration it just moves a little... i checked the trans and diffs to see if anything was unplugged, everything seems fine there. im new to the chevy/blazer world, and was wondering what kind of problems i could be having. hopefully something simple!!

*Edit* BTW the speedo works fine, and the trip meter has the same problem as the odometer, im thinking it piggybacks off the odo.

'97s have the mechanical tumbler wheels for the odometer/trip meters, so I'd guess you have a bad tumbler assembly. They receive their signals electronically, there isn't a cable on the tumblers. You might want to take the assembly apart to inspect the wheels. I replaced my tumbler assembly when I put a salvage dash cluster into my Blazer. Here's how I did it;
Remove the cluster from the dash. The shroud around the cluster is held in by two screws- in the cluster area. the rest of the shroud is snap-fit.

Next, flip the cluster over, then remove the circuit board from the tumbler assembly;

Now, you can inspect the gearing;

if i pull the whole cluster apart, how do i get the glass back on? i know this has been posted before, but its always the speedo and the odometer, this is just the odometer which makes sense if its the tumblers. can anyone else back this up before i go tearin stuff apart?

I think Mike done a good job of telling you how to do it.
The gass cover just has some small screws around the edges.
Good Luck
