Transmission Dipstick??

After searching and reading I've come to the conclusion that the 4-speed automatic transmission in my 1996 GTI is not supposed to have a transmission dipstick. While searching for an oil leak I stumbled upon this... Anyone have a suggestions or ideas what this is? If this is indeed the tranny dipstick then what kind of transmission does this car have? I want to do a filter/fluid change and don't have easy access to a VAG as there is no dealers in this area. Thanks to all who respond!!!
