96' Camry transmission compatibility

I have a 96 camry that needs a new transmission. A guy a work owns a 91, or 92 Camry that was hit a couple weeks ago that he will sell to me for 400$. It still drives fine, just needs body work done on it, but I sort of just want to buy it for the transmission.

The first question is whether it's even compatible or not. I'm not exactly sure what year it is, but does anybody know how far back the 96' is compatible with.

Second, how much trouble/value is it to part out the rest of the car? How much could I get for the engine, and other parts? What about from a wrecking yard?

Another option I'm considering is to buy it, fix it up and resell it, just so that I can learn how to do some of the body work. If it's too dificult or requires too much specialized tools, I'm not too interested. So how hard would it be to fix? It needs a new passanger door, hood, and bumper. The guy who owns it says he a quoted 400 for the labor, if that's any indication of what's involved.

Thanks,
Dustin

If you have a 4cyl it should be the same as a 92 but maybe not a 91.
Why not rebuild it instead?
There is no point in putting an older tranny in your car just to have it fail after all that work.

I dropped a 94 tranny in my 92 and it had just 74,000 miles on it and it failed from a factory defect after 12,000 miles.
So I rebuilt it and now no problems.
Unless your name reflects your lack patience give it a try.
I pulled the engine with it and fixed all of the leaks.
My original tranny had the OD get torn up from a failed thrust washer after 324,000 miles. Clutches were like new.
Parts for the rebuild were about $100. No really special tools, other than modifying a puller to remove some things. Drilled 2x4 and rethreaded carriage bolts. $1.

Thanks for the reply 300+, rebuilding it sounds like a great idea. I would love to be able to learn how to do that.

Where can I find instructions?

Thanks

Digging around on the internet I have found just about every car manual known to man.
This one is out there. Just Google camry automatic_transaxle.pdf
That one should be close enough.
Happy New Year
