I am gonna go take a look at a motor soon. I need to know where I can find the engine code on the block, and where the V-TEC solenoid (if any) resides, and what it looks like(pics would help.... ALOT). Also could you guys give me key things to look for to make sure that the motor is good.

Also IF I splurge for this would the stock mounts on a B18C1 match up with a 5th gen Civic sedan, or would I need new ones? I am gonna convert from Auto to 5 speed so does taht mean I need new shift linkage? I'm a dumbass so work with me here!

the engine code is right below the head on the block. if youre looking at the engine the way ti would be installed into the car then its on the right side. thats the b series engines anyway. also you cant tell just by looking that its a good engine. you can see somethings by the spark plugs but that doesnt mean its a good or bad engine. check the plugs by puuling them out and looking at them. if they are black from carbon then either its running lean or not being maintained properly. if they are covered in oil stay away!!! "bad engine have oily spark plug" say confuscius!! they should be pretty clean when they come out. not sanitized but not black. ask them to start it. thats the best way. and look for oil leaks. why do you need to see the vtec solenoid? if its a vtec engine it has a big VTEC sig on the valve cover. you cant miss it. and no, ive never seen an LS engine with a vtec valve cover i dont think it can happen. and yes in a fifth gen the engine should bolt right up to your stock mounts. and you will need new shift linkage. i think the GSR shift linkage but not sure. but i know you need new ones. also since you will have to change the ecu anyway you wont have to do wiring to remove the auto feature. but your dash might be a problem. its got the auto dash so i dont know about that. i covered pretty much everything anymore questions?

The easiest way to find the engine stamp is to look at the front of the engine "where you would put your header" and look to the left on the engine block. All B18C engines are Vtech and when you get the engine since your changing it to 5 speed you'll need the shift linkage and the clutch resivoir. Also for your gauges just go to a junk yard and get the 5 speed gauges or look on ebay or look at some junkyards on line it probably won't cost too much. You'll also have to get all the pedals and stuff you shouldn't have to cut anything usually there are just rubber plugs you have to pull out and everything should mount up. Honestly if you've never done anything like this I would find someone to do the swap for you cause if you run into problems then you'll have to tow the car somewhere or find someone willing to come over and help you. But if you somewhat machanically inclined you shouldn't have too many problems it will be much easier if your car already has Vtech cause then all you should have to do is plug in the ECU and the wiring harness and it should work. Thanks for all the info! It's gonna be hard to start up, due to the fact that it's not in a car, and the reason I asked about the V-TEC solenoid is that I though they might have put a GSR head on an LS block or something... As of right now I am leaning away from doing a swap... I'll keep you posted on what happens.

If they did the LS Vtech there will be a an oil line that runs from the head to the block and you'll be able to tell that they did it because it won't be a rubber line. Most people use a steal braided line because you have to tap a holes in the head and block and screw fittings into them. You would definately be able to tell plus if they did do the LS Vtech, I would really doubt they wouldn't tell you because its a lot of work and if it works right it has has the potential to be very fast. It would probably cost more than a regular GSR because of all the work that goes into that, theres a lot more than just running oil lines to make it work right.
