My daughter has an 88 stang with 2.3 auto. She was having trouble with it kindof popping out of gear when she would come to a stop and try to take off again. It would take a second or two and then would go okay. Well, I checked the fluid and it was about a quart and a half low. She said that fixed it for a few days and then it started doing it again. She checked the fluid and it was about half a quart low so she filled it but it still did it. Then a couple of days later she is leaving work and it quits pulling all together. She checked the fluid and says it is full. She says in drive it will go about 10 mph if she gives it a lot of gas.
Anyone ever have these symptoms? Is the tranny shot? Should I change the fluid and filter and see if that fixes it? Is it the Torque Converter?
HELP!!!! :banghead:
Thanks!
Jeff

There is a couple of things you could check. Possibly the torque converter, the pump ( what the torque converter spins) and possibly the valve body (in the transmission pan on the bottom of the transmission.) Just look for anything that is not normal. It sounds like to me the pump has gone out. Automatic transmissions run on pressureized tranny fluid and if the pump has gone out there is no way to build pressure.

The tranny is shot. It wasn't "popping out of gear", it was slipping. It probably started due to being low on fluid. But once it starts, its not gonna stop. You need a tranny.

you could possibly rebuild it or have it rebuilt. if you decide to just replace it get a new one noy a used one. it's an a4ld. if they used the same one from then til 93.
