coolant burn

I have a 1991 735i that is burning coolant was a mec. for 5 years so am sure it is a head gasket leak. My question is are there any known problems with the heads on these cars. Am new to the newer BMWs. It has not ever over heated but am wondering if I should send the head in to get checked???
