What do I have to do to an image to give it the right properties, so i can use it as my avatar?

Well, the picture has to be 100x100 pixels and most definately appropriate. If you dont know how to put it in, just click on the little "profile" button near the top of your screen and then click on "edit options" at the bottom of the screen is a place where you can put in your avatar. To do this, find the picture you want, right click on it and click the "properties" option, then highlight the URL from within the little menu that pops up and copy it. Paste the URL into the box for which you put the link of your pic for your avatar, and save changes. It should say how many pixels the picture is in the properties menu where you get the URL.
