The Z28 FINALLY gets some work!

My first racing post in a LONG TIME!!! Finally back up in NoVA(Northern VA) for a decent amount of time. Visiting the family for my birthday(Happy B-Day to me!! February 15 if anyone wants to get me anything:D )

Anyways, I was out driving today, on my way to China 1(gotta love the Chinese food!). I spotted a 98+ Camaro turning right onto Richmond Hwy. a little ways in front of me. I got kind of excited and turned onto the highway a few seconds after him. Right after getting onto the highway, the light ahead of us turns red. Unfortunately both of the other lanes are backed up so I have to settle for pulling in behind him(we're in the center lane). I see the Z28 emblems and also notice that he has a non-stock exhaust. I could kinda hear the car running, didn't sound too awfully powerful, but you never know, he could have been hiding something;) Anyways, he notices me and throws a fun rev. I rev back and give him a wave which he returns. The light turns green and he takes off slow at first, then guns it through first. I tap the gas but don't really try and keep up because the next light ahead of us is also red and coming up quick. I speed up enough to get a bit ahead of the other traffic and shift over into the right lane. I pull up beside him at the red light, and roll the window down for a chat. He can hear my car clearly b/c it's 3 times as loud and lumpy as his:D He leans over and says "Sounds nice man! But still an old outdated motor, hahah" I respond "Maybe a little old, but that just means I've had more time to spend making it faster than you!". We both laugh and he asks what I'm running, I say "lots of good stuff" and he laughs some more. We see the cross-light turning yellow so we nod and get ready to go for it. He revs up a bit and I can hear him holding it steady. The light goes green and he goes for broke, getting a decent amout of wheelspin. I launch VERY SOFT(as some of you know, I have issues with my rear end, and although I THINK I have the bug worked out, now isn't the time to risk it). So I take off barely quicker than I normally would, and don't spin at all. He pulls a fair distance ahead and through first gear he picks up about a car length and a half. I'm only giving it about half throttle though, once again because I'm not sure on the rear. I shift into second though and mash it. Get MAJOR wheelspin in second gear from a roll, and as I make the shift into third things are just about even. Chirp third gear and that's pretty much when the race is over. By the time I'm at 6300 in third, he's a car and a half back, and halfway through fourth he drops to nearly 3 and a half. Decided it was time to shut down as 100mph isn't usually acceptable on 45mph city streets:)
We pull side by side a few seconds later and I smile and say "thanks for the practice"(jokingly) and he says "damn that thing is a monster, take care man". And that's about it. We drive together for a couple of miles at which point we go our seperate ways. Decent race, nothing spectacular, but fun none-the-less:D

Hey, it may be an old motor, but it makes the power, and that's what counts. Don't let them LS1 boys get too cocky ;)

Good run bro!

Kinda funny, as how you beat him top-end, where the LS1 is supposed to be strongest.

A cam'd LT1 shouldn't have problems with an LS1. Plus with what I think I remember that Self has done to his LT1, I know he shouldn't have problems with stock or close to stock LS1's. Am I correct on that (I don't remember exactly what you've done, but I know it's more than I)?

True... but Self's LT1 runs great at any speed... thus is why blew the freakin doors off that LS1.. GOOD RUN!

Why thank you much for all the conrats. Yea, not too many cars on the street I'm having trouble with these days:D (Aren't I moddest:finger: )

Was it stock except for exhaust? - I'm pretty sure it was. Maybe an intake or something, but didn't sound loud enough to have headers and definitely no cam or anything.

I'm making a pretty good amount of power NA right now, so it'd take a pretty decent set of mods on the LS1 to stand a chance. Stock for stock, the LS1'll blow the doors off of the LT1. But modded things are pretty much even. You can make as much power from an NA LT1, and you can an NA LS1 and the same thing forced induction. It would have been a lot worse for him if I had launched hard. Like I said, I took off just a tad harder than I would have, had I been just taking off from a red light in a non-race situation. So I kind of had to come from almost two cars back. I'm loving the way the car is running right now though. Pullling HARD. Went out today before the rain started up and messed around in the parking lot, putting the rear through some trials. Redneck...I'm happy to say it's HOLDING GREAT! No broken gears in almost 15 HARD launches!! Hehehe, most of you don't know, but the damn Moser 12 was throwing ring/pinions one after the other this past fall and into early winter(thougth I had wasted $2000:mad:  ) I went through three sets of 3.73s in a very short time. I'm running Richmond 3.73s now and they're holding up just fine:) Hope things stay that way, and I'll be at the track the first week in March to get some 10 second timeslips!!:D

Oh, by the way...We found out that a random BOLT was just CHILLIN' under the rear-end cover!!! Don't know where it came from or how it got there, or how we missed it before, but we're pretty sure it was flying around and lodging itself in the ring and virtually shredding gear sets, causing the problems obviously.

Hahah, I know right. Needless to say, I was a bit...UPSET:mad: when I found out it was something as simple as a careless mistake that cost me nearly $1000 in parts alone:mad:

I'm looking for high 11s NA, and low-mid 10s on the shot. We'll see though. Those times are fairly optimistic. I'll probably run into some unforseen problem that will keep me in the 12s or something, lol(*knock on wood)But we'll see. I'll be sure and let everyone know how it goes. Might bring the '96 along too and see what it can pull in its mostly stock trim. It'll be a bunch of quick quick cars when we go down. Mine, my friend Bretts SI pushing 24+ lbs, another friend's turbo LS pushing 18+ lbs, single turbo Supra, a modded C5, and a supercharged LS1 TA. All of those people are confirmed in the group so far, we're trying to round up as many quick cars as we can though. The more the merrier:D
