GTI VR6 vs. GTI 1.8T

I'm up in debates here...

I own a 96 gti vr6 and I love it.. however it has cost me a ton of money and it is difficult to tune.

my friend took me out in his 2002 1.8t gti, and it blew me away, his only mod was the greddy chip.

so my problem is.. i love my car.. and i think the vr6 is generally a better engine. but i want to go faster, and all i hear is that the 1.8t is the tuner car.. so do i buy the 1.8t.. or do i continue to tune the vr6.

if anyone with any experiance with either car could post i'd love it. i only have my car and my friends car to go on and i want to hear other peoples experiances. and if anyone know's anyuthing about the 20yr aniversary car that would be helpful too.

thanx-
Brandi

well the VR6 in the long run will make more power but the 1.8T will make power cheaper but not as much as the VR6 can. So if it were me i would stay with your VR6
1)Its got more displacement
2)You already have it so why buy the 1.8T

Pretty much what he said if your just looking for a few more boost not really racing or anything go with the 1.8t they are really easy to mod.

But on the other hand if you turbo the vr6 thats just a raw ass car.

this topic has been covered extensively b/n this, the jetta and golf forums...

the 1.8t with a chip makes more power than your vr6... always will...

but this topic's been covered alot...

what're your plans now? do you wanna build the vr6, or ditch it?

I think I just needed someone to give me some hope in my vr6... I love it, and i've already invested the money in tuning... I just wasn't sure if I should go all the way with the turbo, new cams, etc... Everyone's all 1.8t crazy in my town.

I will most likely stay with what I've got, I just need to keep the boys at my local motorsports shop off my ass about the 1.8t.

whats the most horsepower anyone has seen in either the vr6 or the 1.8t? I have a techtonics chip in my car right now. is there anything better?? i'm such an ameture, heh.

I'm sure this has all been covered before, I'll dig around when I have more time.

Thanks

Brandi

I'm probably at 230-240 now, havn't dynoed it yet.
The most powerfull VR6 I know of, is EIP's 658hp Golf.

if you've only got a chip, get the intake, exh... drop it, maybe the cams... it's all pretty inexpensive stuff... all things considered...

deakins is pretty smart on the vr6 stuff...

the eip car is a turbo'd vr6, but puts down hella nice power...

i think it's on www.racingflix.com, not sure though..

the 1.8t can easily make 400hp... it's the same motor in the audi tt, and that has 225 with a different ecu and turbo... so tuning only means big power...

the vr6 is limited somewhat in n/a form, but once you put an s/c or turbo on it... look out...

It has also got an extra fuel rail and strenghtened DV and internals.

My friends friend has a 2000VR6 and he says he is making almost 300hp. From what I know he has had it tuned, chiped, exhaust, spark plugs, spark plug wires, pully system, and cold air intake he has a few other things done like he had it lowered but I cant think of any other HP mods. I think he is exaggerating a little bit but it feels 300hp fast

300hp is BS.
200 is more like it. And around 175 at the wheels.
The engine will feel a lot more powerfull though.

Out of the two the fastest I have seen is a 2000 Golf 1.8t, that ran a 12.20 at 117mph. pulled from 18turbo.com [street driven]

362.4 hp http://www.18turbo.com/billyt-2002.jpg

the 12v vr6 made 172 up to i forget what year, and then 184 after that...

the 24v makes 204

(all are hp ratings at the crank)

factory of course...

and we all know that vw tends to underrate their motors...

the 2000(?) cobra was rated at 320, and didn't make the right whp for 320 crank hp...

power numbers are pretty accurate now...

in the 60's, they weren't... and japanese supercars are the same way...

but for the most part, the numbers are pretty true...

most companies underrate as a safety net...

How much horse power would u estimate to be in a 2000 gti vr6 with a AEM cold air intake and a axle back exhaust....... and is it true that the 99 and 2000 gti vr6's have a smaller engine than the newer models?

Deakins

No, but the '99, '00 and '01 have the 12 valve VR6, the '02+ have the 24 valve.
