ok on my exhaust header cover, the area around one of the bolts totally broke off, now i was wondering, should i go ahead and take off the cover, because at about 1,800rpm it rattles but then goes away at 2,000rpm. but i juss wanted to know if it would be safe to take off the header cover, i was worried about melting wires and stuff around it. but plz help

thnx

Yeah, rip the sucker off. I had to do that to my wifes 84 because of the same thing. The engine bay will be slightly warmer but shouldnt be that bad. You could also wrap the header if your concerned about heat.

Another downfall will be loss of heat contained in the heads, in essence loss of HP.....

So you are trying to tell me that if my engine runs hotter I am getting more HP? What a load of bullshit!!

There is a temperature point which the engine will run optimal, but heat does not create power, the thermostat controls the heat.

So, Brian, if heat creates HP, why should I put a cold air intake on my car? To get cooler air into the engine? Cooler air gives me more HP right?

The cover on the headers is a heat shield to protect the rest of the engine, not keep the heat in the engine......

And I used to work in the automotive industry......we would run engines for hours without the heat shields on when testing.....

He was trying to tell you that if you keep the heat in the exhaust gasses, you get better scavenging, and flow through the exhaust, leading to a slight vacuum which sucks air/fuel mix through the cylinders, increasing power. Also, keeping the heat in the exhaust gasses keeps the engine bay, and thus the engine cooler, resulting in a better running engine.
