I'm stateside, but I might be able to help. Once I *finally* got out of the babysitting circuit, I got a retail job working the Christmas help things. It's basically been retail and service since then.
I can't wait to be a teacher. :bloated:

Avoid retail like the plague... it will completely spoil your positive outlook on humanity.
I would also say that you should avoid working for franchises of large corporations (McDonalds, etc.). I would try to find a locally owned business or Mom & Pop shop to work in... They tend to be less strict and "policy" oriented.
I've been working since I was 13. My first job was a paper-route, but would you believe I actually got fired from it? LOL. Probably would've been fine, but it was an early morning route, and anyone that knows me can tell you that I'm a bit of a deep sleeper... Oh well, I made some money...
2nd Job when I was 15, after being fired from the paper-route was at a bakery as a dishwasher/janitor. It was the best job I ever had... I only worked 3 hours a day after school, and it only took me about an hour to get my work done if I really busted my ass, and the rest of the time I just hung out, got stoned, played hacky-sack, listened to music...
Worked in a pizza place after that, another fun job...
After a while though, you start depending on your job for income, like when you move out of your folks house and whatnot, so you have to take things a bit more seriously... I say have fun with it while it lasts...

First job would have been a paper route when i was 13-14 not too sure
then when i was still 14 i started to work with my dad doin odd jobs at his garage like balancing tires sweeping cleaning bookwook cash basically i did all the god damn bitchwork
haha im 18 and i still work there until im outta highschool which is the end of this year
so there are advantages to workin in a garage though right now i don't think anyone of my friends knows more about cars then me
also its fun to fuck with them with knowledge when they think they know what they are talkin about when they are not

I was a busboy for Outback Krackhouse(aka Outback Steakhouse):D Good pay($2.13/hr + tipshare which was usually about $60 a night) but the hours were HORRIBLE(3pm - 1am) and the drama/BS that was in the place was too much to deal with. So I promptly quit....After a year and a half:finger:

My first job was with a trucking company. I helped keep the repairs garage and warehouses clean.
My second job was at a movie theater as an usher. I was the people person and cleaned up after the movies were done. Was fun until I got jumped by some guys I had to tell to leave...
My third job was back at the trucking company, where I did oil changes and small cleanups on the trucks. Mechanic's assistant. Payed good, but was dismissed when it got cold.
My last job was with an automotive parts store, from which I was promptly fired after getting into an arguement with a customer because I had to tell him 50 times that we didn't have those little LED lights that go on wheels and windshield wipers. Damn Ricer.

My second job was at the Los Angeles Colloseum where I was an usher for UCS games, it was cool, I got free food and beer, yea I was only 15 or 16. Beer was nasty to me at the time but on a hot day, those frosty beers looked good and did the job. I came up on alot of women also. Oh well $80 per game was cool at the time:rolleyes:

I don't live in Canada so I can;t give you any useful advice.
My first job however; was working for a company that sent out t-shirts, mugs, and videos. If you ever watch PBS and they are having a fund raiser and if you donate so much you get something. Well we shipped out that crap to people. I made next to nothing at that job, but it was alright. I liked the people I worked with.
