Hi, I'm new here and I want to know which of VW's cars you think is the best overall, style, engine, safety... everything.

Please, go into as much detail regarding your choice as possible.

Be it GTI, Jetta, Beetle or any VW car, there is no wrong answer, this is mostly subjective and so keep the flaming to a minumum.

Peronally, I preffer the jetta, however I really don't know much about cars :bloated:

Ready. Set. GO !!! :D

Im not a big VW fan, but I do like the Turbo Diesel Jetta's. They are extremely efficient, and are a very nice car overall. Im not sure how these cars are for repair bills, etc, since I havent owned one myself.

I have however drove a 91 and an 02, and liked them both very much. (liked the 02 better, for obvious reasons :D ). They are a very refined car, handling and overall driving experiance was very good. The performance of the Diesel wasnt all that great, but the TDI's arent race cars, they are for economy and they do it well.

I will definitly own a TDI Jetta at some point.

Hi, I've always had Vw's.
All the cars listed below are mine or I drove them for some days.
Then here is my choice:

Passat and Bora TDi 110hp: great confort, good reactions up to 3000rpm but doesn't go faster than 205Km/h. Lot of place for driver and passengers.

Polo 1.9Sdi: (my wife's car) Cool car for the city, doesn't need a lot of place to park.

Golf MK3 VR6: Perfect, the best I've ever had. Great exhaust noise, good max speed , good reactions of the engine from 1000rpm to 7500rpm. Good confort and enough place for my great legs.
But "drinks" too much.

Golf MK2 Rally(G60): Too nervous for me but I loved the 4wd and the noise of the compressor.

1962 Beetle: classic car , great for w-e.

And the award goes to: Golf Mk3 VR6 :D

No, unfortunately I had to sell it two years ago.
But one day, when I'll be richer, I'll buy a 4WD 2.9l VR6.
It's rare but it's easy to find one here in Europe

I'm not a big VW fan, but that new R32 does look nice. GTI body with a 241hp VR6, 4motion all wheel drive putting down 236lb ft of torque through a 6 speed, not bad.

Scirocco, obviously... :D

Even if my Rocco is equipped with "only" 75 hp, it actually offers a lot of fun on the road, and the handling is very good - a friend of mine is owning a Mazda RX-7 (older model, don't ask me when it was built), and although his vehicle is almost twice as powerful as my Rocco, he do have a hard time making me disappear from his rearview mirror as long as the streets are curvy (if my Rocco had the same power, it's bye-bye Mazda...). And, I'm (or better said the car is ;)) still earning admiring looks when I'm rolling through the town...a definitive classic.

The R32...now, I'm a little bit divided about this car. The exhaust sound is nice and mean, the look is mean, too, and the car can go fast...but 1500 kgs? The first GTI weighed about 810 kgs, and if you could implant the R32 drivetrain into the Golf I, it would drive around the R32 in circles. And the price sticker...uh-oh. Fot that money, I would rather buy a used Passat Variant VR6 synchro and transform it into a nice sleeper...and have still enough cash left for a monster stereo and two years of fuel, taxes and insurance.

An underrated classic...the K70. Not only that it's design was clear and sober (compared to it's rivals from Opel and Ford), it was the first watercooled FWD from VW in serial production, and it offered some intelligent ideas (for example, changing the clutch doesn't require to dismount the gear box). The clocks had a slight Porsche touch, and you could even order the Fuchs alloys with the K70LS model (1.8l/100 hp). Too bad that the way more sophisticated car never made it against the Dasher and the Audi 100, it shared the same fate of his "brother" NSU Ro80 (both were NSU constructions, but VW bought NSU in 1970).

I love my beetle and i wouldnt take any other car in the world. I hear people say that they are unreliable and I think they are full of crap. My beetle has only broke down 4 times in the past 2 weeks. Now thats what I call reliable and if you dont think so you better get your head examined. I love my beetle and everyone else should get a beetle of their own.

I love my current VW the most of any I have owned...Passat W8 Variant (wagon)...awesome beast - plenty roomy, very fast, AWD and excellent traction, brakes are awesome, and it loves high speeds!

http://www.funtigo.com/go/o696627?i=o696627_9543.jpg

Passats in general are my current favorites. I also like the new Touareg, especially in V10 Diesel X-package form! The R32 looks fun as well.

Historically, the Karmann Ghia probably ranks up on the all-time list, followed by fastbacks, 3-door squarebacks, 21-window busses, Sciroccos, Corrados, and the original Bug.

I voted for "Other" simply cause I love the Rabbit/Golf 1 chassis. I'm not a big fan of the GTIs simply because you see more of them and the owners are typically dicks (at least in my town). I love the clean body lines and the chassis stiffness. I've owned a good 5 or 6 A1 chassis as well as a couple Corrado (A2 chassis) and I can honestly say the A1 is my favorite.
Here are some pics of my old Rabbits/Cabbys and one of my old Corrado...

I love my A3 Jetta GLX. I swear by VW in general, but I love that car to death. Its quick, responsive, comfortable, with all the right options and...yeah. I can't say enough about it. I haven't even really done much to mine yet (though I have some of the most grandiose plans :evillol:). Nice lines, like the man said, elegant, but will definatly still get up and go. Mustangs for lunch (I know, that's not saying much, but I've really only gotten stomped a few times racing, and it was by modded cars and I'm still mostly factory).

They just keep on running forever. I've had no major problems with my 95. If you just keep it up, take care of her regularly, they'll run forever.

I once submerged my 87 GTI 3 inches up the doors trying to cross a flodded road to pickup my little brother. Hit the water, all the dash and warning lights came on, then went out, but the engine kept on running, plugged away till I got through. Drove about another 2 minutes till the water ran out, and everything was back to normal. I swear, they're invincible.

Get whatever you like man. You can mod out anything to suit your taste, just as long as you like the base you're starting with.

Scirocco - both early Wolfsburg edition and later 16v, underpowered but a great driving car...either of which I would trade for a mint Dasher Diesel, another underpowered car but a fantastic high-mileage driver.

No offense, I find the current models overrated except the new 6-cyl Golf, the Passat is overpriced and the Jetta needs a new look, it's getting pretty dated and costs too much for a Golf with a trunk, IMHO. At least big HP is back in fashion :)

Phaeton to me as well :) Better than the S-class and 7-series, only lacks the badge and looks like an average Passat found in dozens in the parkinglots (except for the size, the Phaeton is really HUGE)

I would've voted Jetta, but i had to go with Other. How come the Karmann Ghia was left off the list? That is actually my dream VW to own. If I didn't live in a city that wrecks nice cars on a daily basis I would get myself one. Til then my old beat up Jetta is taking it's place.

I would say definitelly the Mk2 Gti 16V (last edition with big bumbers etc) .as stated before, it was the last REAL Gti... later models just lack that "touch" and feeling of a real Gti....

If I went with an 04, I would definately go with a Jetta GLS TDI 5 speed manual. Perfect since I do about 40 miles per day and just an all around great car. What I truly love is the fact that with the TDI you can start in 1st without using the clutch!!!

If I had to choose from past Vee-dubs, I would get a 1999 Passat GLS 1.8T 5 speed - white with black interior leather, heated seats, esp, the works. NO MODS WHATSOEVER!!!! The new Passats are a bit more family, which isn't bad, just not my favorite. The 1999 were perfect. They had the upgraded front blinkers, new style wheels (as opposed to the 98's), and the design ages REALLY well.

I still want my Lupo.
Damn you VW of U.S. importing regulations, when will they learn that we need that car.
It is the new GTi. The Golf is something compleatly different now.
And for the price of an R32, why not go out and find a coulple of wrecked TT's and you all the leftover bits to make a 1.8T AWD monster in a Mk1 or Mk2. Plus they would actually beat Evo's and STI's in a relaxed sleeper style.

MINE!!! It's a 1974 std beetle, which I've owned since new.
reason's why? okay.

#1 - Easy to maintain and work on.

#2 - gas is still cheaper with a 10 gallon tank, and my overall gas milage is around 30mpg.

#3 - pre-emissions vehicle. Need I say more?

#4 - Can still drive places other cars can't go, especially in snow and ice.

#5 - with all the "newer" cars around, no one has ever tried to break into my car, but I have seen cars right next to mine that have been broken into. Just keep passing me by.

#6 - Chicks still dig it, and a lot of other folks too.

I think that'll do for now.

I voted for other because I like the air-cooled busses, even though they are slow and noisy and don't have much heat in winter.
They seem bigger inside than outside and are easy to drive. They can carry a lot of weight and are pretty simple, mechanically. I have a '69 with a camper bed and it's all purpose. On a trip someone can sleep in the back and alternate drivers. It gets about 24 mpg on the highway, which isn't too bad.
I wouldn't want to run into anything though because you are sitting right at the nose.

My vote is in Other as there was not enough choices. I am a Karmann Ghia fan, but as a youngster, there was something about the Thing that I thought was totally cool. There is something about the Ghia's body design that is brilliantly sexy. (No wonder it was my father's favorite car! Just took me to move out (10 years ago) and after his death (6 years ago) to realize why (about a month ago) he had a Ghia for as long as since I can remember.)
