In your life....

Okay, we all dream of the day when we can do completley asinine things like buy a McLaren F1 or hang license plates off the back of a Porsche 962 GTP racer, but the chances of that happening are slim to none (at least if I understand the typical financial status around here. ie- broke)

But that doesn't mean we can't still want cars, right?

So, I was wondering, what cars do you folks dream of that you actually believe you can buy in your lifetime. Seriously. I'll start with my list, and you can get the idea from there.

1969 AMC AMX 390. I'd build this one up like a Trans-Am Javelin with more modern parts.
1959 Chevy 2-door. It doesn't have to be an Impala. In fact, since I want to shave it, slam it, and power it with a 427 or 396, the less collectors value the better.
Triumph GT-6. Light, powerful, independent suspension all corners.
MGB GT. This one gets a Rover V-8 and Graphite Metallic/Lime Green paint to replicate the new factory racers.
1989 Nissan 240SX fastback. Sil-80 conversion project, complete with SR20DET.
Early RWD Porsche 911: Light and potent, plus those ones can be turboed independent from the factory.
1968 Chevy Corvair Monza Coupe. A company called Crown Engineering had a kit to swap in a 350 and Hewland transaxle. It requires removal of the backseat and some moderate fabrication skills. But makes a really REALLY fun car.
1972 Datsun 240Z. I like them. And BRE parts are still around.
1970 Datsun 510 2door. Ditto.
Carburetted Ferrari 308GT. Believe it or not, you can get these for less than 20k in good shape.
Morgan Plus 8. Think an aluminum chassis is light? How about a WOOD chassis. And they're still in production. YAY!
Duece coupe. There's a company out there that has steel repro bodies and chassis for 32' Fords. Mine would have to be blown, probably powered by a Hemi of sorts, with ground sweeper pipes and monster Mickey Thompson tires on Cragar wheels. Black with flames, chopped, and very chromed. I like 'em that way.
'53 Studebaker Commander Coupe. The classic "Loewy coupe". I don't think I'd mess with this car until the engine blew. Unless I bought it with the engine blown. Then, in goes a nice modern LS1 with Borg-Warner T56 tranny backing it up. Clean exterior updating with larger wheels and tires, and a deep pearl paint job, plus cushy interior appoinments, would make it a sweet custom cruiser.

There's others, but these ones are pretty high on the list and are those that I'd like most to have in my garage. Each one, I'd think, one be a blast to own, drive, and tweak. Especially the Corvair.

So, how about you folks? These were all dreams started with under $30,000. That's not a price cap, that's just speaking in terms of what I think is realistic for a fun car to supplement the faimly ride, or the daily driver. Just think of what you want. What you think you'll be making, and keep writing 'em down until the wife sees how big the garage is.

Or the husband. Or the pet snake. Or the aliens. Or whoever else's opinion would force you to spend your money elsewhere.

Hmmm...

1991 Callaway Aerobody TT - 20 built, 475hp and 600lb-ft says it all...
1992 Viper RT-10 - Only 280 made this first year of the snake
1961 Jaguar E-Type RHD - I'd like a very early series 1 E-Type, as they are the best looking IMO, and I don't think I could own a classic British roadster without RHD
1951 Jaguar XK-120 OTS (RHD) - these are beautiful cars, especially with the rear wheel covers.
1978 Porsche 911 Turbo (930) - The quintessential 911 Turbo - air cooled, 5 spd, tail happy. Plus 0-60 in 5 flat with a top end of 155 sounds pretty nice, as well.
1985 Ferrari Testarossa - flat 12 Ferrari...what more could you ask for?? Plus early examples can be had for right around 60K
1981 BMW M1 - always wanted one of these....the only BMW supercar. This is rather expensive compared to the others, at around 80K.

All of these can be had for 30-60K save for the M1...in my price range, at the moment.:)

btw, why is this in the street racing section?

I could build a car like the one in my sig for $10,000 or less. :)

Same money into a first generation RX7 with a 427ci Windsor, based off of the 351, maybe 600hp. Full IMSA fibergalss body, BBS LM wheels, and custom double wishbones all around... Oh yeah, 600# springs at all 4 corners :D

Cobra kit car powered by Ford 400M stroker, about 460ci, EFI, turbocharged, Boss 351 heads, running on hydrogen... <cough>1200hp<cough> 2500lbs.

Porsche 930, custom 17" black painted Fuchs wheels, with EFI conversion, 400hp, 2600lbs.

Porsche 924S with engine from 968 swapped, mild tuning, 260hp, weight reduction to around 2400lbs, full coilover conversion 300#s all around. Can you say... Daily driver? :D

And where the current 924 is going... Audi ABY or AAN 5 cylinder and 931 5 speed swapped in... 300# springs M030 swaybars, weight reduction for around 2300lbs...

My next car I plan to acquire, 94/95 Ford Thunderbird SC, work over the 3.8 engine, maybe 450hp, just enough for it to be driveable. That would be my highway car...

You think you could own all those cars or one of them?

Cbass
02-07-2003, 08:57 PM
Well, the Cobra kit car and the 930 would be a tad expensive... The RX7 is dirt cheap though, that's just a stroker kit, a set of heads, the suspension and brake work plus the body kit.

The 968 engine is worth perhaps $2500, it would bolt right up to the 924S clutch, and the weight reduction is pretty cheap as well.

The 5 cylinder is about the same money, and other than that, it's pretty cheap suspension work.

A SC goes for around $3000, and it comes with a steel crank and a supercharger good for that power from the factory, it's jsut a matter of porting it, and putting good exhaust on it...

I think I could own all of them if I built them and sold them, and I might even turn a profit on a few of them. I'd like to get into building kit cars, but that takes mucho dollar to start up :(

The RX7 is in the works, as is the 924... I'm looking to buy an ABY or AAN 5 cylinder, but I don't have the money right now :(

Hakka, it's in here because I'm sure that one or more of these cars will end up at the stoplight gran prix sooner or later. Or at Autocrosses, drag strips, cruise nights, amateur road rallies, track days, and any other number of ways to enjoy automotive enthusiasm, for that matter,

I know for certain that I'd try and enter that Crown Corvair in road races and rallies. Nobody would stand a chance against my fuel injected (Crower mechanical FI, just like a Can-Am car  ) 700HP small-block. It'll handle and accelerate. Plus look ultra-sweet.

Also, stellar choice on the E-Type. The 3.8L Jaguar straight-sixes are beautiful engines.

there are more than i could possibly list, but i'd start with a nice ferrari f40 and a bugatti eb110 ss.

The list is far too long for me to list every single car, but I will list some of the more realistic ones.

1990 Chrysler LeBaron GTC: This car is almost mine. One of twenty-five made that year. I like the looks of it, and it is the prefect sleeper.
1989 Chrysler LeBaron GTC: I would like to find another one of these so I could have the two good years for the GTC.
1971 Plymouth Cuda: Since I don't have five hundred thousand plus dollars to throw around I don't mind if it is not an all numbers matching car, besides, I'll be driving the car around. That is they are for. Also, it has to have the shaker hood!
1972 Plymouth Road Runner: Another nice looking Mopar. It would be nice to get one with all numbers matching.
1970 Dodge Challenger: This is a must have for my collection much like the Cuda.
1970 Plymouth Superbird/Dodge Charger Daytona: Though the Charger Daytona will fetch more I would rather have the Superbird.
1970 Plymouth AAR Cuda: What is better than a Cuda that can go fast in a straight line? One that can take the turns just as well.
1965 Plymouth Barracuda: A nice lightweight sleeper. Drop the new Hemi in and have some fun!
1965 Plymouth Hemi Belvedere: How can you beat a factory drag car? Damn things even came with a disclaimer that once you drove it out of the dealership it was yours, no returns because they new damn well what you were going to do with it.
1970 Chevy Chevelle 454 SS LS6: One of the most badass Chevy’s ever produced.
1965 Chevy Corvette: Best looking generation for the vette in my opinion.
1965 Shelby AC Cobra: You can't beat a car made of a fuel cell, tube frame, engine, tranny, and YOU! I would take out the side oiler and drop a Hemi in, sorry Ford guys.
1967 Shelby Mustang GT500: After seeing the one in Gone In 60 Seconds I fell in love with this car.
1994 Dodge Daytona Iroc R/T: Wheeeee!!!
2004 Dodge Charger R/T: Ten times more wheeeeeeee!!!!
1985 Dodge Ram Charger: Put a lift on and run over anything in your way.
2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi: Gotta' have a nice powerful truck.

That is just my list of classics and domestics. There are a ton of import cars I want, such as the Fairlady ZX, a nice Ferrari GTO, and a nice Porsche 911 Turbo, and who can forget a Lamborghini Countach? The list goes on for miles my friends. Also, if I were extremely rich I would like to have two so I could modify one and leave the other stock. Ohhh, I almost forgot, I must have a 1998 Dodge Viper GTS-R, not the GT2, the real GTS-R.

My list would also take too much time to list, but it would look something like this guy's garage....

yenko collection (http://www.highperformancetoys.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1874) :D

notice the "spare" big block engines and rear end. That ZL1 427 camaro would be near the top of my list by the way.
