hey guys, I got a question...... I got a 2000 v6 3.8 firebird, I want it to sound better. A muffler guy said that I should go with a 3" from the manifold, all the way to the muffler, and he said that its not going to sound like a v8 (ofcourse) but it will sound a whole lot deeper. is this true???
and if you are going to say "get a v8".......... If believe me, if I had the money I would, a v6 is all I got.... for now. thx

It will not sound deeper. I have a friend that had a 2000 camaro with a 3.8 and he complained that it was to raspy.

Get some headers, a high flow cat, and a 3" cat-back (suggest Magnaflow) and it will sound decent. But the rasp will never go away...

I do already have a high flow cat. and as far as headers, a friend of mine has them on his bird and he said after a dyno and everything that the change was not that significant because the manifold for these cars was made pretty well, that headers were not really that necessary.

dont even toy with flowmaster, i love it on my IROC, but i heard it on a sixer, and it was just sad.
that being said, you dont need a 3in system for your six banger, it wont do anything, all you need is headers and a muffler. there are plenty of emissions compliant headers availble that will work with the factory exhaust. and a muffler is an easy change to the backside. and those two are what change your sound, pipe diameter only effects flow and backpressure, not sound.

:icon16: I already agreed not to waste my money on doing the 3 in. thanks, and as for putting headers....... ill wait till I have a v8, then Ill spend the money. For now Ill just do as many bolt on-do it yourself upgrades which I know there are not many of.:iceslolan

i dont know why, but those 3.8s sound like RC engines to me.
there is a video on youtube of a 2.4 camaro doing a burnout and it truly sounds like an RC car.
my caprice has a 3.8 in it, and with some tricky adjustment of the carburettor to allow a 600-ish rpm idle, it sounds like a v8 while its idling...
dont hit the gas tho because as soon as i do...

(i dont know how to type raspy in engine noise, but i hope you get the idea)
