Second hand WRXs are a huge risk. I wouldn't touch one if you paid me. Think about it - why do you want this car? To drive hard. Guess what - that's the same reason the current owner bought it. Do not buy one unless you have money for the following:
-New clutches
-New drivelines
-Turbo Rebuilds
-Whole engine rebuilds.
In short - do not get a second hand one. Get something else, keep saving and buy a new one.

Actually he's not asking about a WRX :)
He's wondering whether or not he should buy some of the older model Imprezas (a question I would like to know the answer to as well). I'm considering buying an older Impreza before I go out and buy a WRX (or hopefully STi). From what I hear, the older models are pretty reliable and shouldnt cost you too much.
Good luck on your search!
I do agree about the 2nd Hand WRX statement though (if anyone is thinking about buying one); why bother buying a used 2002 WRX when you can get a new one (2003) for a couple thousand more? Most used WRX's I've seen are still pretty damn close to their original sticker price and I'd be much more comfortable with a new WRX than a used one. I know this kinda contradicts what I wrote in the first paragraph, but Oz does have a point about people driving their WRXs hard.

An Impreza Turbo is a WRX. What is the difference? Even if it;s technically not a WRX, all the same things I said apply.
