Turbo kit for '02 Lancer 2.0?

A friend of mine has a '02 Lancer 2.0 and is looking for a good turbo kit. He is currently looking into the SharkRacing kit but that seems to be a bit expensive...is there anyplace else that sells a good kit or can he piece together some sort of turbo for cheaper? Thanks guys

Try road race motorsports .com
They have two kits - one intercooled, one not. They go for about 3 grand but you should expect to pay about that for any turbo kit.

Tell your friend to try www.visionimports.com. The carry a three stage turbo kit which is the same on as shark racing, but they are a hell of a lot cheaper. The stage 2 kit is only $3100, or you can opt for an intercooled version for $3600. Road race uses the same turbo as RPW which is the company vision carries the turbo for, but the RPW kit has reportedly turned out 100 + HP with the direct bolt on. I'm not bad mouthing road race's kit, but I just feel that vision's kit is a little bit better. Check out the web site for both www.roadracemotorsports.com and vision and check em out and call their tech support for help, but make sure to stay away from shark racing. Their kits are way over priced. :smoka:

Hobie, I'm not sure what the pics are supposed to do for me, but yes I do know someone running a straight RPW stage two kit. They don't have any complaints. As I said I'm not bad mouthing RRM. I personally prefer the kit vision carries. The only difference in the two really is 20 hp or so and powder coated piping to the color you like. If your running a RRM turbo fine, but I won't be.

That's outta left field. I think you missed the point of my post. I've never seen a complete RPW kit and the pics weren't for you specifically. The only install I've seen is a hybrid RPW/custom job. It was the 3rd boosted Lancer I'd ever heard of and the first in Jersey I believe. It's based off the kit they later produced, but it does not use all the same parts and was not bought as a complete kit.
I don't think HP difference should even come into play when comparing the two kits though. Once you're FI you can raise the boost or (more importantly) properly tune to make up for inadequacies, but I think the key factor is having a kit that's complete enough to be able to make these changes without investing hundreds or thousands more (i.e. making certain the fuel system can handle the increase and). The RPW kit seems to me like it has future upgrades in mind.

Wouldnt it be easier to get a Galant 4G63 engine out of the old galants and stick it in? Already low comp, turbo and intercooled. Will fit straight in as far as I know.
It is basically the EVO engine. Can get them for around $1500 in Australia. That is roughly $750 US.
My friend put one in his mirage for $3000 Aus or $1500 US, Thats a lot cheaper than ur turbo kits.
All U have to do is put a bigger turbo on and ur flying.
OR alternatively, for more money put a EVO version of the 4G63 in. But no use in spending the extra money, just get the galant engine.

Hobie, I've talked to vision many times to make sure the kit is a complete kit, and they assure me that it is. All the piping, fuel rail and regulator, injectors, and so on are included so they say. Vision claims that the only thing you will need is an intercooler, but they now carry the intercooled kit for 3600. Obviously any company can say they make a complete kit, but until someone gets it you really don't know for sure. If it is a complete kit great, and if not I will humbally accept a "Told you so" from you. I guess in a couple months we will both know the answer.

You missed it again. I'm not trashing the RPW kit. It just doesn't have what I want in it. The kid has bought his kit before they even began selling if I remember correctly. It's just a 1.8 4g93 kit with some extended and altered piping. His kit is a hybrid. JUST his.
As for the swap, no it's not easy at all. It's costly and impractical. I don't exactly have a spare 4g63T with a FWD tranny to look at, but i'm 99.99999% sure it will not drop in. Remember, it's a Mitsubishi not a H&A. :p

As i said b4, my friend put the 4G63T engine in his mirage and just kept the existing gearbox. $1500 US.
Didnt take that long, just new engine mounts needed to be made, thats all.
U can get a 4G63T engine here (Australia) for about $700 US.

Simply put: The Lancer is not a Mirage. Give it a shot if you're certain, but expect to spend more than $1,500 US. Unless you can do the majority of the work yourself it's going to be very expensive, and, even if you can, it's going to be quite labor intensive. The Evolution 4g63 would not work though because of it's AWD tranny. It's been rumored that less than a handful of people in the US have pulled this stunt off. I've yet to see evidence of a single one. If you're brave enough to try it and document it I'd really love to have a step by step to show people who constantly ask about this. I just can't emphasis enough that you shouldn't expect it to be a simple swap. Zat eez all! :)
EDIT: Forgot the other downside. No parts will be ready made to fit your car. Most other tuning you do will have to be custom. Your manifold would probably have to be rebuilt along with downpipe and intercooler piping (it'd be a super waste imo to put in a low boost 4g63t rather than using your 4g94 and turbocharging it for a similar cost).

A mirage is a hatchback lancer. The engine bay is exactly the same size.

I just thought, maybe there are some differences with u guys driving on the wrong side of the road, maybe the engine bay is set up a little differently. But here u just get a 4G63 engine as it is the same block size as the 4G93 basically.

Our engine is transversely mounted. Your Lancer is different than our Lancer and your Mirage is different than our Mirage.

Thats what our engine bays look like as well. Except my friends mirage is the older type where the gearbox was on the other side and the air filter was too. Around 96 mitsubishi basically did a mirror view swap of the engine in the engine bay.
U can still get a post 96 evo engine in there.
So Evo 4 upwards.

Even though there are strong factors in common I have to agree with Hobie, you're looking at 2000 bucks at the very least. There are going to be a lot of small odds and ends that are going to cost more than you think

People have been doing engine swaps on cars for as long as cars have been around.
At the moment the latest craze is swapping Performance Japanese Honda and Nissan engines into lesser US Models.
Most of this involves useing engines that were never sold in the US, and never intended to be fitted into US models.
And example close to the idea of swapping an EVO engine would be the Nissan SR20det from the GTiR Pulsar or Turbo Primera that is often swapped into the Infinity G20 (US Primera) or Sentra.
Lots of custom work is required, including fabrication of engine mounts, exhaust and intake, and some wiring for the ECU etc.
It might sound complex, but if well thought out, and properly prepared it can be accomplished in only 2-3 days work, and the result is far superior to simply adding a turbo kit to the orginal US spec engine.
You have to remember that the Japa engine is designed to tolerate high levels of boost for long periods of time, everything in the engine is enginered for it, and differs from the non-Turbo version sold in the US.
You will find that the 4g63 or 62 is the same.
Altough you might be able to install a low boost turbo kit for as much as an engine swap, you end up with an engine that is being stressed beyond its design limits at the cost of reliablity, and if you want to really increase the performance you will need to rebuild the engine with very expensive stronger internals.
An engine swap gives you these stronger internals, and an ablity to reliably handle large amounts of boost effectivly for free.
You simply get more for your money.
And of course you don't have to use the EVO engine, in Japan the EVO has a younger brother, the GSR Lancer. Also 4WD the car uses a simpler driveline, and a smaller 1800cc turbo engine. Its cheaper and slower and sold in much larger numbers.
However the engine still has heaps of tuning potential.
But even simpler why not take an engine from the US Eclipse?
You guys need to take a more serious look at the possiblity of doing an engine swap vs installing a turbo kit.
Its a much more popular option in Ausie and here in NZ. Swapping the 4g63 or 62 into the Lancer Coupe to make a stylish and fast FWD car is becoming more and more popular.

Try finding a transversely mounted 4g93T. It ain't easy. I'm still in the process of trying to secure one, and even they're not really made to handle high boost without replacing internals (from what I've read on AU GSR sites anyway). I don't think anyone in the near future or who has ever asked about this swap is likely to 1. put the 4g94 to it's limits or 2. put the 4g63 that so many want to swap in anywhere near it's limits, making the swap worthwhile and effective.
Most of the people who ask (not claiming this is the case here) just want to have their US Lancer magically transformed into a "JDM Evo VII". I could vomit from the amount of times I've heard this question from people who then turn around and ask how they can make their cars run 10's or something to that effect. Again, not saying that is the case here, but it seems the less a person knows the more they want to swap the engine. The 4g9x family has been shown to as a capable little engine to work with. I say, work with what you've got.
For the record, I'm going to attempt a head swap with the 4g93T if I can get my hands on one. If I'm unhappy with the results or if it does not work out I'll put the whole engine in, sacrifice the 0.2 liters, and pray the trannies bolt up. (they should without any problems).

Just saying that in AUS and NZ, many many ppl do engine swaps. Hell my rx3 even has a engine swap to a 13B Turbo, my friend has the 4G63T in his mirage and I have another friend with a MIVEC 1.6L in his car.
Maybe australia and NZ just have better access to Jap engines and that is why they cost a lot less than in the US.
We even have a couple of 260Z's with RB26DETT's!

The 4g63T in the Mirage (retaining FWD) is something that's fairly common in the US for Mirage tuners who desire something closer to the Evolution, but it's still pretty rare. The vast majority of swaps in the states seem to be H&A. I've seen people switch 4g6x's for 4g63's etc, but going between families (4g94 to 4g63T as proposed in this case) is looking to offer up a lot more problems. And yes, I realized the Mirage's 4g93 to 4g63T conversion would be extremely similar. I think I mentioned it before, but it's been rumored to have been done. I'd like to see one of those cars (at all. I've still seen no evidence though I don't doubt their existence) and talk to the owner and/or mech just to find out how it was done and what problems they ran into, because I can think of a few to begin with.
