So how many of y'all have old trucks (1977 or earlier)?

What do you think of them?

How many miles?

What engines?

Don't have one, but see many 73-77 still running in my area.:D

Had a 64' 2wd w/ 6cyl & granny gear 4spd speedo said 99k but it didn't work so who knows. It was a great and dependable work truck so long as you weren't in a hurry to get where you were going. Since the body was so rotted out on it (only thing holding the cab on was the steering collum:D) I took the wood flat bed off of it and put it on a 76' 4wd w/ 6cyl and gg4spd with 79k on the speedo that I bought last summer for $200 (body's much better on this one) and drove 180miles home. Have since done $300 worth of tinkerin and now have another great work truck.

1977 F-250 Custom 2WD Auto with a 390 FE. Has some mods besides the 390 swapover too. Selling soon, unfortunately, cause I just picked up an '01 F-150.

75 F100. It was a 302 3-speed manual on the column. When the engine finally gave up, I bought a 3/4 ton frame, dropped a 460 & C6 in it and swapped the body to the new chassis. My 460 rebuild didn't go so well. Several wrist pins started coming out and chewed up the cylinder bores. I had a shop completely rebuild it and it ran perfect for 3 years with great power. Then one day it blew a head gasket and left me waiting for a tow truck about 2 hours from home. I needed to get the truck fixed as soon as possible, so I pulled a new 460 I had built for a mustang drag car, and put it in the truck. Had to do some fuel and cooling system mods, but it worked well. That chassis never did handle worth a darn and with a builder estimated (not me)550 hp, the truck was a handfull. But as long as I was going straight, it made for a fun ride. Had full length headers and 3" exhaust and it sounded great. The sound definately didn't fit the looks of that old beater truck.

i have a 78, boy these old things are tough, i doubt these new trucks will be as in good shape as the old ones now. I like the look you get when someone sees a nice restored truck, not many people have one of those, anyone can go buy a new truck.

Had a 1967 F-100 Ranger, with a 390/C6, blue on blue, Mustang buckets, Sun tach, sliding window, tailgate net, rubber bed mat, Cragar Super Spokes, and black bumpers and grill...I miss that truck...

Just bought a 1970 F-100 Ranger with a 351W, 4-speed, and it was the same shade of blue (Brittany something-or-other) but is now gray primer. I've got a long way to go but plenty of time to get there...

I have a 1977 Ford F-250 super cab long bed. It's almost original. All it needs is a new cluster panel, door panels, carpet, and a steering wheel hor cover. But there is only one problem. Whoever owned the truck before cut the wheel wells so they could put bigger tires on them. And it did have a factory camper but a tree snagged it and (Because it was old fiberglass) it fell apart.

I have 1969 F100 short bed. Spent 5 years doing an off the frame restoration. Has a 302 3sp manual right now. Porshe red with black interior. I bought it in 1978 for $1,100.00. I will have it until I die unless some one totals it for me.
I am about to install a BW T-10 wide ratio trans and a 4.10:1 rear with posi. I love the 67-72 body style. Easy to work on too.

My dad gave me this truck when i was 16 , i joined the army at 18 went around the world 4 times and was just minding my own bizz when i saw an ad in the paper from a friend from my home town,,,,,, 1954 chevy heavy 1/2 ton five window 3100 deluxe, Rootbeer met brown chrome nose good glass ,,,,,,hit deer best offer!

I called my boss (l live in seattle ) told him my mom needed me and off i went.
Found the truck,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,oh my god it was my old truck!!!!!
The guy was out of it , I asked him if he had the tittle and he went in the house and got the tittle and keys (i could have hot wired it) (I wired the starter)..... He came out and gave me the tittle and key's and walked away ,,,,??????,,,,??????,,, hey man he's the $500.00 you wanted.
Oh, yea thanks man (his eyes were red as the sun, hmmmm .
He fired up and i was off,,,,,,,,,,, to the gas station, at 16 this thing burned a lot of gas ,(im 41 now) The 283 still purred after 20 years and all i need now is a fender and step rail on the right side.

I am trying to fix up a 1971 F-100 and need all the help I can get. I am not much of a grease monkey but I do a lot of my own repairs. If you have any ideas I sure would appreciate them. I plan on converting to all power accessories and dropping it in the weeds. I would like to put a wooden bed in it but still not sure about that. It's in OK condition but needs a lot of work. Its' power plant is a 302 out of a 85 Mustang that I had bored 30 over. It spots the original heads which I had ported and polished and had double lift springs installed. It's a hydraulic roller rocker assembly with a mild cam. Still working off the stock cast iron intake and exhaust manifolds with a 2 barrel carb. one of the first mods on my list is getting rid of the point type ignition and going to an Jacobs' electronic ignition.

I have a 1980 F100 with 105k miles on it, runs like a top, except it tends to randomly heat up real bad, not so much after i replaced the fan shroud that had been removed, replaced the sticking thermostat, and backflushed the radiator. Also hits really hard when put into reverse.

Has been a good truck in the past . . .

Has been . . .

Very little rust; still, not running, in the back yard, it still doesn't look that bad . . .

the 460 eats gas like no tomorrow. But still, when it was running right, it was like no other.

If I get the carb running right again, it'll be as right as rain.

I have a 71 F100 with a 300 CI (guy told me he replaced the 240) not sure? It runs but needs lots/lots body work. My first problem is loose steering (rag joint looks good) and probably transmission linkage adjustment (reverse and 2nd is at twelve o'clock) so 1st and 3rd is at 3 o'clock. Any fixes / recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I am curently restoring a 77F 100, short bed stepside.
It has a brand new Ford crate 300cu.in.6cyl. I have converted it to automatic, power brake's, power steering.
I've added so much new stuff It's probably best not to take up space telling about it.

Now that appear's to be a Ford truck that's used as a truck. It also look's as though you have had a ball driving it through everything. FANTASTIC.
That driver's side door look's just like mine did prior to my body work.

09-14-2004, 08:07 AM
Man, you just don't know. I wouldn't trade this thing for the world. Its only got a 3" body lift on it now, and the 35's clear fine. I plan on adding a 4" lift and some 38.5's or 40's one day and gears of course :evillol: A friend of mine also has his own body shop and is letting me use it as long as I want to TRY to beat the dents out and shoot a cheap coat of paint on it. I want it to stand out like a sore thumb so I need a bright color. This is the 4th Ford I've owned and I love them. I've had a 1971 Sport Custom, 87 f-150 4x4, 89 f-150 4x4 and then the 77. This Silverado I bought just doesnt seem like it'll hold up.

I completely understand what it is your saying. Most guy's , me included, get attached to their truck's, and they have their favorite's. I've owned a 56 F100 that I started to customize, but never got finished.(I was made an offer that I couldn't refuse) 68 long bed Chevy,76 short bed Chevy,61 F100 uni-cab(sold for 5 time's what I had in it) 92 Ranger, and now my 77 F100 that I dearly love. With everything that I've done to it, it run's and drive's great.
I did the body and paint myself on this 77. It doesn't look great, but it does look good. I've been offered double what I've got in it, but I just like it so much I won't turn loose of it just yet.
How about "SCREAMING ZONKER YELLOW" on your truck ?That would get attention.

I had one and sold it to my little brother and my older brother has one that my grandpa bought new in 79 it is a f-250 it had 300 6cyl 4-spd 4wd and the only thing they did to it was overhaul it a couple times, put a different head on it, and bored it out. I think it had over 300,000 miles on it and it would go litteraly anywhere. Now it has a 390 with a 4 spd and the only reason he put it in there was because he wanted more power, he loves it more than his newer truck.
There are all kinds of them runnin around here i think there is a 66 runnin around too.
They recently held a mud run and the old fords were the second most common ones there.
The truck i had i built from several different ones because of rust issues but it only had a 302 with an auto cause thats all we had that ran at the time.

Stock 4X4 from the factory, rare in those days. Still has the original 292 V8 bored over to .312. Runs great, fully restored. People always ask me about it (except my wife asking when it will be gone (She'll be gone first...))

I'm about to get the tranny rebuilt. I use it for hunting and towing the boat. Gas mileage is about 12 on a good day. Not very fast, but great in heavy snow.

My great uncle gave it to me and it has no rust at all. Every time I climb into the cab I remember my first few hunting trips riding in the middle of that very same cab. My great uncle driving, and my grampa riding shotgun. Telling stories about their youth (1920s and 30s), and their service in WWII and Korea.

You can't buy that kind of feeling.

I owned a '76 F-150 Custom when I was a teenager. It was old and beatup, not a chick magnet but it was definitely a work horse. I sure wish I still had it.

I had a 79 F150 4x4 Ranger until last fall. The guy who bought restored it to cherry and it is a beautiful truck now. I wish I could buy it back.

I still have a 72 f-100 2wd explorer package but it is just a runner not to pretty. I am looking to restore it but have no experience so I think I will just start and see what happens. Any ideas or places to look for help would be appreciated.

I like the old trucks but I don't like the ones that look like shit (nice kept is what I like). Only thing I hate about old trucks is 4 wheel drum brakes, point ignition, and carburetors (I hate them with a passion, give me EFI any day over a carb).
