'92 golf hard start/no run

My girlfriends golf is very hard to start and will not idle.
I have checked it out and I have narrowed it down but still cannot figure it out. I have established that there is fuel pressure, spark, the idle air bypass is ok, ignition module is ok, and there is sufficient air flow. While
testing the input to the coil I noticed a slightly erratic spark condition right before the car dies. By trial and error i discovered it wasnt the ignition module. I think it is the stator in the distributor but I'm not sure.
PLEASE HELP.

We did check it with a test light, it seemed ok but i also think that could
be the problem. BUT its expensive and i cannot return it if that is not the problem. Do you know of any better way to test it?
Also we don't know where to check for trouble codes>

Besides a voltmeter, no.
It could be the knock sensor, and even the ecu.
I don't really have any experience with Digifant engines. :(
You could get the fault codes with a VAG-COM (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/), or at a dealer.

all the guys at my shop agree with you that it could be the hall sendor.
I just orderd one adn hopefully it fixes the problem.

But wouldn't it be cheaper to find a used distributor at a JY?

it would be cheaper at a wrecker but they are non returnable.
from the parts store I can return it if the problem isnt fixed.

So I tried replacing the hall sensor, it didnt work
So I then checked the valve timing. It turns out that
her timing belt had skipped a tooth. I replaced the timing belt and it fired right up.
all that trouble and it was the timing belt.

Same thing happened to me when my VR6 chain skipped.
