My little brother owns a 91 MR2 NA.. He was racing the hell out of it and it blew a ring and lost all compression in 3 of the 4 cyl... anyway, he recently got the car fixed and the place that did the work said that they could do a 2.0L bottom end and keep his exsisting Tranny, Head, and all other parts that are still in working order and he would save $500 by getting the 2.0L rather than getting the NA 2.2L bottom end.
So, my question... he is having some major problems and the place that did the work is having to work on his car almost on a weekly basis (thank god for warrenties) .. anyway.. a friend of mine that's a mechanic at a performance shop in town and owns 2 MR2's says that it can't be done...
Who's right? Could thier possibly be a 2.0L bottom end frankenstiened to my little bro's 2.2L NA? He's telling me he noticed a drop in perforamce since the work was done (so bad, he says he got creamed by a slightly moded Civic EX once they hit 3rd - which would have never happened before).
Any Info/Opinions are helpful. Thanks guys.

The 3S-FE engine is the little brother of the 2.2L, but why? Doesn't
sound like a good idea to me.

Well, because he's broke and he needed to cut every cost he could.. the cheapest he could get a 2.2l bottom end was $500 more than the best deal on a 2.0... and he's selling it soon anyway, so he's not looking into performance at this point.
