i mostly use mIRC, but ever since the more popular channels are being closed or put on "invite only" i sometimes run low on places to look. so other than kazaa, where do you all get stuff?

I buy the CDs and rip'em myself. :) Then I burn 'em onto my CD-Rs and enjoy 13+ hours of music per disc in my car.

I use Kazaa, but it sucks... the older version was a lot faster...

It really sucks compared to downloading something in internet explorer... I get 350k/sec using IE, but only 18-30 using Kazaa...

I got something the other day called eMule... its wierd... downloads faster than Kazaa tho...

ive never heard that, but id be safe anyways. irc was created as a "chat" program, people have now just found ways to exploit the file sending capabilities within the program. just like all chat programs(aim, yahoo, icq, etc) they all have a send file option. the government can try all they want, theyll never stop it:D

do you mostly download random singles then?
i use kazaa every once in a while if im looking for just a single song. but majority of the time i only dl group released albums. like recently, i got the new 50cent album... stuff like that.

what are some good ftp's? a while back i wiped my system clean and reinstalled everything, and in the process i lost all my cuteftp files.

About the jail terms et all........Piracy is not a crime against the US governmental laws- hence there is little they can do about it- but the Copyright acts do allow to sue a P2P provider for damages SHOULD they have operating offices/servers in the United States :)

I used to just d/l the mp3's and burn them, but now I get the songs and if the album is good enough to buy, i go and purchase it.

We all know that the real music collector wont download any mp3's. Since the cd has way better quality, plus art work, and booklets. There are CD's that my dad bought a long time ago recorded in england, like uriah heep and deep pruple that are worth around 40-60 bucks, and same where recorded in japan with special art work and booklets which are worth over 60 bucks. well here we go, my dad is a real collector cine 1978, i could never get him to download anything off the net :(

Yeah, I have downloaded a few full albums but mostly I use it to download a few songs that I like from an artist. I don't want to buy the whole damn CD for two songs. I just feel that the RIAA should cut their losses and offer CDs for a reasonable price and stop screwing the consumer and the artist. They should have offered a downloading service where you could download individual songs for like a quarter a piece. I think it is too late for that now though, it is too far gone.

As for the FTP sites, let me look around. I am in the same boat and did a clean install recently and I thought I had that list backed up, but I'm not sure.

You would also be surprised at how many of my Mp3s are legal since I do own a lot of CDs. I don't really buy them anymore though. I'm sick of being screwed, and they aren't doing anything about it besides alienating their customers. I say let them burn.

i dont agree with that necessarily. i am a huge music fan, but thats it. i would never keep cds in the packaging or in perfect condition to resell later. i want music for personal use. i love music, but i could care less about the cd liners or a plastic case it comes in. why pay $20 for all that, when i can get it for free a month before it hits stores.

that would have been a good idea. years ago i would have done that constantly. there was always a big process behind whether or not i should buy the whole cd. since a single cost like $5, i figured if i liked at least 3 songs, i may as well buy the whole damn thing.

but youre right about it being too late. now that this other way of getting music has been tapped, unless theres a huge decrease in retail prices, the industry will just go down.

I agree, and on another note. While Mp3 isn’t a lossless compression form, you can't hear the difference. You can't tell me you can. That is like saying records sound better than CDs. While they should, they are too frail. You try fitting your entire CD collection on a computer in WAV format, not going to happen unless you have over 500 gigs. I have 40 gigs and it is almost full.

Don't say I am not a true music collector because I download a lot of my music. I collect music for the music to listen to it. You’re talking like the collectors who collect cars too look at them; I collect things to use them. I don't plan to sell them. I could care less what some stuffy old ass thinks its worth.

word up!!:D i was just about to mention that. i dont know anyone that could tell the difference between a cd and a mp3, and of course, everything i dl is encoded at a high bitrate.

It makes a "jingly" noise in the really high pitches. The noise is not at all evident in distortion-guitar music, but if the song is a piano solo it is VERY obvious, esp. with lower levels of compression.
I buy CD's if I like at least 3 songs on them. I don't collect music to resell. I buy because I enjoy the liner notes and because I have respect for the artist and the amount of work that goes into their music. I don't particularly like the RIAA but I buy stuff from the artists I respect, with the notable exception of the Smashing Pumpkins' Friends and Enemies of Modern Music, which I downloaded because it is not commercially available and was deliberately released straight to mp3 by the Smashing Pumpkins as an affront to Virgin Records.

Everyone thinks they should get everything for free nowadays. :bloated:

It all depends on the enconder. I have quite a few that work better on different songs. I have yet to have someone tell me that they could tell it wasn't a CD. I make sure of it. I am obsessed with quality.

Also, I don't feel that I should get music for free. I just don't feel that it is fair for the artist and consumer to be screwed over by the RIAA. If I could buy the cd from the artist for five bucks I would rather than support the RIAA. I am doing this mostly out of spite for the RIAA, change their ways, they might change my mind.
