Is that dash painted or dyed or recovered? Im gonna shy away from using white and keep the interior colors black and silver/grey(the two colors in that car). How hard and how long would it take to get something like this done and could i do it myself?
Does anyone know where I can get white reverse gauges for a 98 civic DX auto that is km/h not mph?

It looks dyed, but I can't say for sure. And yes, you can probably do it yourself. My friend dyed his civic interior all himself, here's some pics of it

Do you think I could dye my top dash the same color grey/silver as he has on his seats? What is the best processs and materials to use for recovering, dying and painting interiors?
I am planning on doing it all myself little by little. Im gonna keep my colors to grey/silver and black with blue lighting.

Ive read through pretty much every thread that has been started about interiors. There was one where the guy had airbrushed his plastics with white ice pearl. Whats the best kind of primer, paint and gloss to use for plastics. I dont want it to turn out like the stories ive heard about chipping and fading and stuff. Any help is much appreciated.
BTW your friends and your interiors are tight, one day i hope to have my entire interior customized, right down to dying the seat belts:rolleyes: .

What I wanna know is, whats the resale value on a car that has painted interior, I know I wouldnt get a car that had a shitty one, but if it was halfway decent and not too crazy I would go for it.

I saw this part on a car show on speed TV and they were talking about how you can get your car appraised by someone and they take into account for bodywork and all of that so when u try to sell it you get what its worth.

so for the plastics i pretty much take them out if possible, clean them with soapy water and then apply a couple coats of primer. Then let the primer dry and apply as many coats of paint as i think is needed.....let that dry completely and then apply the finish?

no you need to prep it.
1.scuff the panels with a scuff pad.
-sold at any discount autoparts store
2.then you need to clean it with sem soap.
3.scuff agian and
4.then whip down with rag and paint.
never recovered seat before.

Well, i sprayed the vinyl dye directly onto the vinyl parts with no primer or anything. for the hard plastic parts, g2's directions said that i could use primer and use it just like plastic paint, so thats what i did. My interior is a lot farther along now, i'm just waiting for the pictures to be developed, then i'll post them up for ya. btw, thanx for the compliment!

BTW.....do you know if it would be easy to get the handles and door armrest thing wit the power windows and locks or should i try and get the whole panel?

cool post.
not to intrude, but what if you have a black interior? will the die still take?
and I think that the primer, or lack there of, is the key in painting the plastic and vinyl. Kicker you said, as well as another post somewhere, that you didnt use primer and your interior came out fine...I wonder if the primer is the cause for cracking in that its not for vinyl like the other paint is, hmmmm

dye is just that. it doesn't actually "stick," but instead goes into the vinyl and colors it permanently. after you've dye'd vinyl, you can scratch it, poke it, even rip it, and the color will still be there because the vinyl is now THAT COLOR. If you have a black interior, and you dye it red, the vinyl will now BE RED. so yes, even a black interior will work if you dye the vinyl. I'm not sure if the original black color will have any effect on the color of the dye, like if its black and you dye it red, maybe it'll come out a little darker red than if the vinyl was originally white, but still, the vinyl is permanently the new color, and there's nothing that is sticking to it.

01-29-2003, 11:13 AM
I dont know if this would be good for your vinyl but maybe if you want your dash red, dye it white first and then white?

i'm sure its just adhesion promoter/primer. They have lots of names for it. I don't think they're all exactly the same, but there basic job is to allow paint/dye to stick to plastic.
civic98stunna
01-29-2003, 08:21 PM
oh yeah, in case any of you are thinking about dye'ing your vinyl, one of the most important things to do is get a product called plastic/vinyl prep. brand doesn't matter, but basically it takes out all the armor-all and grease that may have been put into the vinyl in the past. not only that, but it dries the vinyl out like a dry sponge, so that when you apply the dye, it sucks it up like a sponge would water (not literally that much, but you get the point!) i even used it on the hard plastic pieces, cause it also is a cleaner, and it'll get all the junk off pretty much anything you wanna paint/dye. definately one of the most important steps in the coloring process.
