AWD is hard to drift with. since all 4 wheels are scrambling for grip, it's hard to swing the ass out. and MR is included in my assessment of RWD. :D

there are countless articles about oversteering in new stock evos and wrx's. not a big deal.
go drive one hard in a corner and stomp on, just like a rwd car... it'll drift

What's a cheap FR to buy in North America?
B/c I want a FR to 'play around' with, since FFs are boring, and most MRs are expensive; and I seem to find AWDs understeer relative to FRs.
Looking at the AutoMarts, the least expensive FR in Canada is the 240SX. Any other suggestions?

I've drifted. And I dont mean powersliding out of a corner, I mean full inertial drift. It was 4:00AM and I was on a 4 lane road with NO ONE around :D . I wouldn't do it in any other conditions.

Stock AWD vehicles are designed to understeer because people can't handle oversteer
If you set it up for oversteer its all good :D not to mention you have to keep the accelerator down mid drift so that you don't lose control

It doesn't take much, either. Thanks to the engineers who decided that I don't need powersteering, or power assist brakes, I can just engine brake into a corner and give her a little flick, then mash the brakes to lock up the inside rear (which has lightened because of the weight transfer to the front due to the massive decel of the MG), slam the throttle to get the rears spinning (plenty of torque from the over square 1.8L pushrod four does the trick, especially in second gear) and countersteer my way through.
The only problem is that once you've lit up the rears on the B, they don't grab again until well into fourth. First through third? Ultra tight close ratio. Fourth? Lazy overdrive that kills my revs. Oh well, keeps her together and cool on the highway.

Hasn't happened yet actually... I think it's because it has so little traction, it slides before it can really roll.
I have some planned upgrades, 16" Steelies, weld up some swaybars out of steel pipe and fittings :hehehe:
I'm working on a plan for IRS, that'll probably come from the T-Bird, which is going to be a donor car for the drivetrain already, I might as well use it's suspension and brakes as well.

No, I plan to do double wishbones all around, chiefly cause they're so simple... I'm going to wait until I've taken those welding courses before I start manufacturing control arms and wishbones.
Also involved would be coil overs, with 300# springs all around.
There is no way in hell I would give that car more grip with it's current ride height. The only reason it doesn't roll as it is, is that it has no grip on it's passenger car all season cheapass tires.

Renault did that with their Espace minivan too... Made a mid engined F1 powered minivan, 800hp, 200mph :D
My plans are to get a Thunderbird SC 3.8 liter V6 in there... stock it only makes 230hp, but port it, custom exhaust and headers(have to to fit it anyways), overdrive the blower, and you've got a 350hp engine. The stock boost is 12 psi I think, and with a 10% overdrive it should be making 15psi or so.
I'm of course stripping the thing out, as it's primary use will be as a shop van. Gut it and spray the back with truck bed liner :D

I'm reopening my speed shop, it's my parts hauler... I can fit a bigblock with headers and tranny attached in that bitch :D
Aerostars aren't really that bad either, they're fairly nose heavy, but they're RWD, and they're unibody like a car. There's room to flare the fenders, and I think it would be pretty badass... When you think about the money going into it, it's not a lot. For $2000 I can get a parts SC, rebuild the engine... Another $500 to do the exhaust, and flares and stuff... $1000 on the wheels and tires... Basically, it's practice to see if I can make strong suspension parts out of welded steel, and so on... A test bed.
Also, I can't think of better advertisement for my shop than a 12 second van with a rear window decal that says
"SBC Speed Shop Van"
"It doesn't just haul parts, it hauls ass."
Many people will read that as the Aerostar disappears into the distance. :hehehe:

I have drifted my cobra before, and my other mustang. The problem with most places is that, I don't want to go off the road into tree's and what not. So I have to find a nice road, or a parking lot.
There a few nice roads out there, but you have to look. I don't know how you guys do it, but when i am coming up to the corner I will do one of two things.
1. come in fast, and lift off the gas giving the car a negative weight transfer and cut the wheel. hold the gas constant and the wheel into the turn for a little then back it out easy.
2. come into the turn at a medium pase, hit the break, and turn the wheel at the same time. Then hold the gas and wheel into it, backing it off as I want to straighten out.
How do you all do it.

Drifting is not just getting the tail out once. You need to string together multiple turns. All most of you are talking about is over steer. Drifting requires control of the slide for a period of time. Go buy an Option or Drift Tengoku video and get educated. It takes practice but when you get it, its so great.

#1 is a true inertia drift, that's pretty much the way it's done. Of course, you didn't mention coming into the corner hard on the brakes to load up the front ;)
I'm not sure if you mean just using throttle steering on your second method or powersliding out of the corner...

most of us are well aware that there are multiple actions involved in drifting and stringing multiple corners together.
however, you can still drift around 1 corner. you don't HAVE to string corners together to drift.
Option video 91, i believe, shows this rather well...
there's a drift contest in germany, and the drifting is based on 1 corner.
it's won by the JUN Super Lemon EVO V.
oversteer is when the rear comes around in a corner.
power oversteer is when you gas it around a corner when the rear is coming out.
know the terms before you accuse others of not knowing them.

ehh yea, well I do that more often, but I have drifted it, just gotta be going fast enough around the corner and let off the gas quick in second so it transfers weight to the front and swings the rear end out i think Cbass gave a good explanation as to what drifting is in the other thread about drifting FWD, today I tried it in my sister's caddy but it didnt' work:( i had to drive her car since mine is out of brake fluid so i have no brakes almost, the rears will lock up, which is quite fun

i think i've drifted every car that i ever got to drive. regardless of model, FWD, RWD, 4WD, even drifted an SUV, and a Toyota Emina Van.
but, the most fun pack car that i got to drift is the DETOMASO CHARADE GTTi 88. Since i dont have access to AE86's or silvias or skylines here.

In the winter, when the chance presents itself (or I go out looking for chances), I love to rip up on the handbrake and go around the corners sideways.
In the dry, its a lot harder to control, especialy with fwd. Still, Ive managed it a little bit, but only in parking lots so I cant crash. Also, does losing control and having the ass end wag out count?:alien:
