Anyone know why production stopped?

Howcome McLaren stopped building these incredible cars?

two reasons i can think of. to make them rare and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

McLaren Cars has an interesting by effective philosophy on producing cars. I feel that they have been very successful in both making a nearly perfect car and in ensuring that the car will be desireable and command strong values for years to come.

Simply put, they produced only enough cars to classify as a "Production Car" to therefore weigh claim to the Fastest Production Car, to officially campaign the car on the racing circuit, and to provide enough cars to supply to the open market such that not too many were available and therefore reduce the market value in years to come, but enhance it.

Still today, the McLaren is the Fastest Production Car, it is hugely desirable, and commands prices still higher than when they were offered new.

Rest assured, the McLaren F1 roadcar will never be produced again. And as McLaren has said, they don't expect to ever produce anything like it to compete with it. They are working on other projects for other companies, such as the Mercedes SLR, but not another McLaren.

partly correct on the $ part, but there's a bigger reason. McLaren and Mercedes were partnered in Formula 1. Mercedes supplied the engine for the McLaren chassis(as it still is now). Mercedes wasn't too keen on the idea of McLaren's street-going supercar having a rival's engine(BMW for those of you who are lacking in knowledge:)) powering it. that was the(i would say) biggest reason the F1 ceased production. McLaren never really set a number of cars they would produce, but they did plan on a limited number.

Thanks for the insightful replies. At first it didn't make sense why they would cease production because they wouldn't make as much money but now I understand.

Mclaren actually stated at the outset that they were going to produce 100 cars.

carbuilder2002If you had actually read the recent posts you'd see scans of an article that say McLaren planned a run of 300.

You also say you're a 30 year veteran of car building.

Are there any other tidbits you'd like to share with us in the form of resurrecting threads that are three years old by posting questionable information?

Please stop digging up ancient threads unless there is truly a good reason. It's actually against the rules at AF.com, but I let it slide on most occasions if there's a justifiable reason.

That's almost entirely false.

They did not intend initially to build only 100 cars.
They did not target building the worlds fastest production car.
They did not intend to race it when it was being designed/built.
I am SURE that future value of the cars was NOT a concern.
