R35GTR-the suspense is over?

One dude (don't remember his name), on this board beat a Mucerliago (can't spell the name) the ther day in a skyline. The total cost of the skyline was probably less that the Mucerliago. See what I'm tryin to say? This is just what I feel, not what nissian way do.
Yup, that's me!:) My car plus all its mods cost about 8Ok USD. The Murciellago costs...dunno the price in the US but over here it cost about USD 315k. The point is I don't care that my car is not a Murciellago..I still spank it on the track. :cool:

The Skyline brand and GT-R model have been split up. It is no longer called the Skyline GT-R, it is just the GT-R.

Part of the reason for this being marketing. The skyline does not exist as a marketed brand of Nissan USA. therefor having the top end performance model without the rest of the range is kinda silly. So the brands have been split.

So the us will have the g35 and then the hig performance GT-R. The skyline brand will not appear.

so you just said what i did..

it's based on the same car, and is basically an extension of it...

skyline's not a brand. it's a car. fallible, just like everything else.

the gt-r is the same as an svt cobra r, if you wanna go that route. no real mention of mustang or ford, just a cobra.

but in the long run, it's still based on the same basic car...

From what I have seen of the new GT-R concepts, it will not just be a souped up G35. The sheet metal (..or plastic) is almost completely different. There are probably some frame mods as well. The interior will most likely be very different as well. My understanding is that the new GT-R uses the same platform as both the 350Z and G35 coupe, but that is where the similarities end.

The large difference here is in the number of new parts. The sheetmetal, interior, brakes, engine, tranny, and systems will all be different. THIS IS BIG BUCKS! The Z06 and Cobra only have minor cosmetic changes and usually less options. Hell, GM was unwilling to add a new bumper cover or fascia for the Z06 as it would be cost prohibitive. Even the Corvettes 30th aniversary edition only got stickers, and new shocks!

On the Cobra and Z06 the interiors as well as most mechanicals are identical to their base models. These cars cost almost $10,000 more in both cases. Even the BMW M series price about the same way over their base versions. The price mark-up is a matter of necessity, as making a short run of speciality vehicles on a standard production line is complex.
There is down time for the switch in models, additional training of personnel, higher quality standards, new technical manuals, new contracts with suppliers, design costs, impact studies, new marketing, new advertising, focus groups etc...

All this is horribly complex, time consuming, and expensive. In the end the cost must be absorbed by a much smaller number of vehicles. A good description of this process can be read in "All Corvettes are Red" and another similar book about the New Mustang (I forget the title...).

In the end, the new GT-R will price at least slightly higher than the R34 ( which was about $50k USD new). It wil be a limited run, as there are only a finite number of people who will purchase a $50k + 400HP sports car. Nissan (Infiniti) will be competing for a portion of an already small market. They will be up against a New Viper, and the new C6 vette, plus some other new specialty cars such as the Audi RS8 tt. The primary buyer will not be a 16-21 year old "Fast and the furious fan" but a 40 - 50 year old who is doing well financially. Interestinly people in this age group are not as enthrawled with Japanese sports cars as are younger people. You have to remember that buyers in this age group covet the cars of their youth, which are primarily large displacement American V-8 sports cars. (I believe this is what killed of the original Japanese sports car invasion). So I will stick to my guess of at least $60k but maybe as high as $80k.

The guys in their 40's and 50's today covet the big displacement V-8's today because they are similar in a way to the 60's and 70's muslecars they wanted and never got. I think, however, with the stopped production of the trans-am and camaro, and the introduction of a whole new line of Japanese sports cars, the GT-R will be in bigger demand than ever, even though the price is significantly higher than an F-body car or enen a Vette.

In Japan the Skyline costs $60K!!? Damn I thought it was more like $30K to $40K.

The GTR has nothing to do with skyline anymore, it's a different car.

Don't get me wrong. I believe the new GT-R will be in very big demand! As a matter of fact, I believe that as with all new sports cars the demand will out-strip production. This will also probally mean that the dealers will add a nice mark-up to the already high price! ;)

I think the new GT-R will actually do well, but it will be just one segment of a small nitch market. Think about the fact that it will only grab a small slice of the market share pie, in the growing super-car market. It will have to compete against: the Porsche, Viper, Corvette, NSX, (possibly Mustang Cobra), maybe a New Supra, Audi's RS8 tt, and of course the ever present BMW M series, and Mercedes' AMGs. I am sure I am missing several others as well. Not to mention all the high end candy like Ferrarri and Lambo...

To make a long story short, I can't wait to see the new GT-R! I hope it comes in cheaper than $65,000 as it will help raise the bar of performance in the USA. Unfortunately I don't think it will be dubbed as a budget racer, unless your idea of affordable is between $60k - $80k.

All I know is it's been designed here in the Uk at Nissans NTSE in Bedford and Lotus are helping out on the handling side, not that I thought it handled better than a Lotus anyway.

I knew a guy who was working on the prototypes styling but he couldn't tell me much about the technical side, which was a shame. I think there might be 2 high spec models one for the high performance luxury market and another for the "Die hard" skyline fans. I've seen the one for the luxury end and it has no resembalance to the R33 and R34. It looks like a big Mitsubushi Carsima. The GTR protoype looked bloody amazing though, lets just say you'd get out of its way if you saw it in your rear view mirror.

Initially Nissan was only going release the "luxury" version saying it needed to be a bit more mainstream but a few weeks after there was a press release saying there would be a "sportier" version for the enthusiasts just like the 2001 prototype. Lets hope!

Where is the newly thought out R35 GTR, I would love to see some pictures about this wonderful car coming out in 2005.

Nissan Motorsports (NISMO) now offers a "crate" VQ35 engine (350Z) that produces 450 horsepower.
Each crate engine is laboriously handcrafted in Nissan's Tokyo facility, and each part within this engine is available from Nissan dealers in Japan.
The VQ sports 13.5:1 compression and uses a Pectel T6 ECM for fuel and spark control. What kills us is that this thing uses stock cylinder head castings!

That engine will not be turbocharged 13.5:1 compression if you turbocharge that you can get an engine reliability of about 10 min.....

Also that compresion will cause detonation on anything besides racing fuel which costs like 4$ a gallon. and is hard to find. That makes that engine a racing only aplication. The gtr engine will be most likely a TT set up with something like 8.5:1 compression wichs is fairly standard on turbocharged engines that are expected to be reliable.

The story about Cosworth's and Lotus' involvements is really interesting. There are so much expectations on the new GTR. Really hope that it would deliver. The story about the electrically assisted turbos might be true as I had read somewhere that Garrett has been developing this technology for some time. Will the new GTR be the first mass production car to use this new technology? So many questions...so much expectations...but then again, we are awaiting the new GTR, right?

i would like to confirm that. i've read more than two years ago the new turbos with litlle electrical engines that will spool it up so 0 lag. And i've seen some references to that several times since then. I would be cool if the new gtr will have that tech.

What do all the letters mean in the following:

RB26DETT (are there other combinations of the letters B, N, R...?)
VQ33DETT

(I think I have figured out so far:
D = Dual overhead cam
E = Electronic engine control (ecm/pcm controls injectors & ignition)
T = Turbo (TT = turbo x 2)
26 = 2.6L
33 = 3.3L

Fix up the ones I got wrong....

ok you pretty much got it.
RB and VQ are the engine series. RB being the older straight 6 design, VQ being the New v6.

D= dual overhead cams
E= EFI, Electronic Fuel injection
T= Turbo, TT= Twin turbo.

and yeah the numbers are the engine capacity.

V-spec and V-spec 2 are models/versions of the GT-R. I'm not sure what the actual differences are but, most of it is upgrades and add-ons that you don't get on the regular GT-R

Those are basically model numbers. The R33 and R34 are the series of car. R32 was produced 89-93, R33 was produced 93-98 I think, and the R34 is the current new shape. Then there is the R35(or V35 depending on who you believe). Between those model numbers is a relatively large change in car design, as you will see if you look at pics of the R32, R33 and R34.

The BN section denotes sub models of the series. The BN usually means it is a GT-R model. So as an example the BNR34 is the R34(latest shape) GT-R. there are others such as HCR32, which is the R32 GTS-t (the 2L turbo rear wheel drive model from 89-93).

if you go on Nissans U.S. home page the GTR concept is on there for a split sec if you log on at the right time. check it out....

Ok since no matter what happens this car will be way out of my price range when I grow old enough to have my own car. Will the R32-R34 GT-R go down in price from the current numbers from Motorex. If a decent condition R32 GT-R is about $30k. I figure by the time I get older it will sink to maybe $20k-$25k. Or since they will become extremely rare will the price go up? Also does anyone know about the tuning potential of the new GT-R's engine?

i don't see the r32-r34 going down in price, b/c of the fact that it's not available here, and has to be legalized by motorex.

and besides, and r32 would already be cheaper than the new r35.

however, the technology is about 10 yrs old... you get what you pay for...

and i'm not putting the r32 down in anyway, but the technology and the parts are all around 10 years old, so you've got to deal with a 10 yr old car as opposed to a brand new one...

that's all i was saying there... not that the r32 is a bad car, i know better than that...

That's the only problem the $$$ these cars cost. The R32 is about the only thing I can see myself buying as a car when I get my liscence as all the other GT-R's are way more expensive and I also want one that has high tunability so the first thing that pops into my head is the RB26DETT. My first car is probably gonna be a used Civic anyways. I just love the Skyline so much and I want one so badly. Maybe I can find a decent deal on a used R35? That is when it comes out. I hope Nissan doesn't pin too high of a $ tag on it.

The GT-R is a different entity alltogether. Have a look through the thread to see many concepts images and some closer to life ones too.

Autocar Magazine in the UK has pictures of the new GT-R

The drop of the Skyline name seems to be official now, the GT-R is based on the 350Z framework.

400BHP, V6 TT, 4WD (same principle as R34 GT-R)

Will be released in all major areas (I think) in 2005 and 2006

It sounds like a really nice package I wish they would change the front with those ugly vertical headlights. Why can't they spend the time to make nice headlights that will actually look good or take the R-34's I have no problem there. I like the rest of the car

There is only 2 pictures of the GT-R in the mag.

Article mainly talks about the framework, the delays and the 4WD, nothing really new though.

I dont like the new style, wish they would of kept the previous style but I cant turn down the power :D

So i have heard that we for sure are getting the new gtr and thats a good thing. but my guess is that they will soften the suspension for crappy us roads with all the stupid potholes but at least we will get all the power (400 from what i hear) and what the hell do we have on the american market that can touch that? (not much) and its got the cool-ass gizmos like ATTESSA-EST that bitch-slapped the american companies tech guys who think heated seats are cutting edge.

The corvette is more aerodynamic,weighs less and for the same price of the GT-R you could get a Lingenfelter vette that outhandles the skyline, has 650hp thanks to the twinturbos,20mpg,and tops out at 225mph...
