What a day.

Well, today I finally decided I was going to hit the hobby/toy store to gather up some stuff to get started on modeling. As you know, I recieved a few different models. After carefull thought, I decided the first kit I would build, was going to be a 40' Ford Roadster. It is a pretty nice kit. Anyways, I cut out the color list to bring with me to the store. I needed to go to the junkyard today, to get some parts for my civic, so that took up most of my day. i finally ended up making my way to the store around 5pm. The main hobby store I wanted to go to, had already closed. So I figure, no problem, I will hit the store in the mall. Well, that was a very bad idea. It straight up sucked. No paint, no brushes, glue, etc. They had probably 5 real kits, all the rest was snap together shit  My next place to try would be Toys R' Us. They used to have some good stuff back in the day. Well, the keyword here was used to. They sucked ass as well. They had plenty of snap on kits also. So now I am getting pretty agitated. When I was walking out the door, I noticed a large craft store. I figured they would have lots of paint. They did, they have plenty. But, when I got there, I went to pull out my color list, and I had lost it  grrr. This pissed me off. I didnt want to guess at the colors, so I left. There was a Wal Mart just down the road, and I thought hey, they might have my kit there, I can grab the colors from that. So I head on over to walmart. Well, they didnt have my kit, but the had a ITR kit made by Revell. I thought to myself, cool, maybe I will get that. So I did. There selection pretty much sucked also, but it was far better than what I had seen. I picked up some glue, a utility knife, some 600 grit sandpaper, a nice set of brushes, from very fine, to about 1/4", and a set of 1/4 oz paints. Its a pretty good set, with paint for tailights, corner lights, etc. After that I headed on over to the paint section to get some spray paint. Well, the paint section pretty muched sucked. :) I got a good quality flat black, gloss black, gloss red, gloss white, satin black, ali, inum, gunmetal (very nice), and sun yellow. This was the best yellow I could find, that I liked, that matches the Pheonix Yellow of the ITR. I must say also, stay away from walmart on a friday night. It was whitetrash special night, and busy as hell. I went and paid, came home, and here I am. I am getting relaxed, ate some good food, and getting ready to start on this thing. I must say, I am a little excited. :)

The Revell ITR kit is turning out to be quite popular in our circle. :)
I'm assuming the car detail paint set was from Testors. That'll be enamels. Hope you remembered to pick up enamel thinner! :D
What brand spray paint did you get?

Bling Bling Bling, we have a winner :D
jay-yes it was from testors, is that really bad? Also, I did pick up a little thing of thinner. For the spray paint, I got Krylon brand. It was almost $4 a can, so the shit better be good.
P Man- Thanks :)
JE123- attached is a pic of the cover.
I was thinking about making this very ricy. Nice chrome wheels, wild graphics, altezzas. :D What do you think?

I have that same model, but I haven't started it yet. I feel dumb because I didn't know what the ITR was.

I personally don't like using enamels because they're so hard to clean up. :( Also, remember to separate your brushes into hues. For example, if you use a brush for red paint, clean it, then use it for white or silver, the red will still be there. AFAIK, you can't ever completely wash out all the red.
Really, though, it's just my preference. I find water-based acrylics easier to use, but many people are just as sucessful with enamels. :)

Well, so far I am not satisfied with this spray paint. I have done 2 lite coats, 1 hour in between each one. I can already tell it is going to have that Orange Peel texture. I am going to have to look into other methods for future projects. :(
But so far everything else is OK. The block, valve cover, trans, and header are all painted, ready to go together now. :)

1 hour between!
That is just right to achieve an orange peel effect!
It should 10 minutes max, touch dry really, or then 24 hours between coats! Nothing else!

Really? Wow, I guess I will be sanding it down.
When I paint interior car parts. I wait a good hour in between painting. It all turns out just fine then. I dont see why plastic models would be any different.
Why is it better to wait 10 minutes? After the first coat, it still looked like it had a textured finish.

It's just the way it is! The paint is still tacky, but dry enough not to run after 10 mins!
Any later and you destroy the outer skin of paint that is starting to dry I guess!
Best results are 1 coat every 24 hours! You get a great shine that way as you don't affect the coat previous! It is fully dry!
