Image editing software . . .

I need to find a good download for image editing.
When I say "good", I mean free, and relatively bugless.
I want to be able to open any type of image file with this software, and convert to any type of image file as well.
I need to be able to do in depth, detailed editing (like large zoom with grid in MSPaint).
I need to be able to create transparent areas in some of my images.
I want SUPER DUPER filters and effects built-in . . .
I want to find a download that meets these requirements.
Any help?
If it's free to try, and $ to keep later on, that's cool too.
I want something that will install without changing a whole lot of defaults on my PC.

Try The GIMP for Windows. Better than photoshop and free! Just do a search. Bit of a download though, hope you've got cable! :)

I agree is an awesome program ad free. But better than photoshop... i would not go that far.

I will retract my statement of better (I have both - not exactly legal ;))
I will say equal. With some of the upgrades and mods you can do to Gimp, it's at least AS good as PS. :)

Any ideas on how I can get Photoshop?
I'd like to have that too . . .
I don't have any good graphics software on my PC yet.

What kind of connection are you on? If it is broadband, I can send you a educational copy.
Long time no see btw.
