What do you guys think of music these days?

Stupid ass MTV, playing all these videos over and over, and once again over. They've turned the rap genre into the pop genre, which is a bad thing. Rap used to be classified by its self. You can consider ANY music these days crap can't you?

A few fine examples of OVERPLAYED rap songs.

Izzo, by Jay Z, this has to be the WACKEST song I've heard this year. I was really into it, until MTV started playing it 5 times a day, 7 days a week.

Can't deny it by Fabolous, once again, MTV gave this artist TO MUCH PLAY, and forced me to quit listeing to him, because his songs are overplayed already, and he just came out a month ago.

Anyways, does todays music stack up to the music of back in the day?

IMO....NO WAY IN HELL!!!!

I think today's music is formulated crap. There are, of course, exceptions. Radiohead comes to mind as a good band that is way ahead of its peers.

I hate modern alternitive/rock (or what they define as rock) so much, that I turned to Country music. I love the old stuff, from the 70's into the early 90's. But, most new stuff sucks. Long, and Hard.

I really got into music back '96 and '97, so the music from those years is my absolute favorite. But I like pretty well all '90's, and '70s and '60s music. I like new music as well, but on a song by song basis mostly. Some bands continually pump out awesome songs, like Barenaked Ladies, but all this Blu Cantrell, J Lo stuff all sounds the same and is way overplayed.

I liked Kryponite for about a week when it first came out, but then it was played (and still is) WAAY too much.

I CANNOT STAND Alicia Keys - Fallin'. I hated that song from the beginning, I punch whatever radio button my finger happens to hit anytime it comes on so that I don't have to hear it. I don't know why people love it so much.....

I think they should line up all the boy bands, crappers - I mean rap artists and feed them to the sharks. There is some seriously annoying shit passing as music these days.

All of the great music had already been written long before the current crap came along. Some of the country music is OK I guess.

Rap is not really music. It's African drum beat. It has no melody and therefore cannot be sung. It can be chanted however.

I definately agree that most "modern" music is way too overplayed, trite, and formulated by the same middle aged balding men!!!!
I, too, turned to country for an alternative since everything else is inescapable... Unfortunately, Pittsburgh radio sucks severely, and despite even its 8+ country stations, the same damn country songs are played (all of which are/could be pop-crossovers like Faith Hill, Dixie Chicks, and others).
True, I fall into some marketing traps, but only for "shits and giggles". I bought the 3 Doors Down CD when Kryptonite had been released but a day, and as for my Vertical Horizon CD... they have some really good songs besides the radio play...
THAT'S ALL SHE WROTE! :)

i hate the new crap. i'm a fan of mid 90's rock(metallica, sublime, chilipeppers, etc..) and classic rock(led zeppelin, lynnard skynnard, tom petty, etc...). i can't stand rap. i really dont like country, it's all the same to me. i want to kill all the boy bands!!! all you have to be is good looking(but a lot of the chicks are nasty) and know how to dance to be apart of this homosexual pop culture. you dont have to know how to play any instruments. can you name any of nsyncs guitarists? you dont have to sing. listen to britney for an example of crap. or they can just dub your voice. i cant stand these homos!

I listen to newsradio all the time in my car.

At work, because I have a high-speed connection, I use sonicnet.com. I like it because you can tailor your own playlist by genre, and you can remove artists you don't like. My station is a mix of Jazz and '80s pop. :D

Rock from the 70-80-90's are my favorite.
A lot depends on the mood im in to what i like to listen to.

Dont really like this new stuff much....and rap i hate.

MercCougarXR7
10-06-2001, 10:11 AM
I love how most of us have the same sentiments - we like the old stuff, and hate (most of) the new stuff. Heck, at 22, most of the music I really like was written when I wasn't even born yet, so it's not like I'm an old guy hanging onto old stuff.

I understand how most people can perceive Country to sound alike, and it's true, most of it has a certain 'sound'. I admit that I wasn't too intrested until too long ago, but the music grows on you. Now, my station of choice is the Country one, next is Classic rock, and last is new crap.

Contrary to most people here though, I like a lot of rap, especially the West coast stuff (ie Dr. Dre). Good for cruisin' around :D:D

BTW, if anyone is interested, try downloading some stuff by "Sloan". They are an awesome band from East coast Canada (like me!), but their music has made it big all over Canada, not sure about the US. Really good songs include:

Money City Maniacs
Everything You've Done Wrong
Coax Me
The Good in Everyone

Canadian music rules the world!! :D:D

I think there is a lot of good new music out there, it's just way overplayed. That's why I only listen to the radio or watch Muchmusic (Canadian MTV) once a week to discover new music, but not get an overdose of it and have it ruined.

there's alotta good new underground hip hop.... i hate mainstream hip hop, most of it is complete garbage. Cash Money and most of the mainstream rappers suck, they don't rhyme, they do nothin special... all they do is talk about how much money they have, they are fuckin gay.
Jay-Z - izzo sucks too, i never liked that song, it doesn't flow at all.... Listen to Nas - H to the Izzo, M to the izzo (it spells HOMO) makin fun of Jay-Z

there were tons of good underground rappers with new CDs out last year, like Freddie Foxxx, Benefit, Atmosphere, Jay Dee, Binary Star, Cannibal Ox
and some 1/2 underground people, they're not really underground, but they're not really mainstream... like Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Common

plus i think Gang$tarr is commin out with a new CD soon, cause Guru and DJ Premier put out a new single like 6 months ago called the Revolutionist

Heeps right about Sloan - they are one band that I don't mind too much. I seen them live in London at an 'Out of the Blue' concert. Trebel Charger was there too. I would have had a better time if I had been able to drink, but it was my buddy who won the phone, and I had to drive home when he got drunk...

It's funny how after reading everyone's remarks about music this, and music that, you've all only really expressed your opinions about the music you listen to. Not that it's a bad thing, that's a good thing!(Geez, I sound like DDP:( )

What we have to realize is that ALL music nowadays doesn't carry the same weight as the music of yesterday. Granted, some of us were around at that time, but it just how things are. Today, it's about who can get the next hit out and make the most $$$$, period. So while you all have your favorites that you like, someone else will call them garbage. Bottom line is, music today has different meanings, senses to each and every one of you. I listen to all types of music, but mainly I'm a hip hop head. I like some things and others I don't care for. Music is music, love it or leave it I say. :D:D

If you all want something totally unique, check out In Extremo, they blend medieval/rennaisance like music (not really classical, just kind of stuff you might here a 'band' play back then I guess, mandolins, bagpipes, crap like that) with a hard-rock sound, creating something pretty damn unique. Most people either HATE it or LOVE it... actually most HATE it, its just a little... TOO unique I guess, but its cool to me. Of course, I love that kind of music in the first place (the medieval/rennaisance stuff), and everyone loves hard rock/heavy metal, right? Right?? ;-)

Anyway, as far as mainstream music goes, the more I hear that Chop Suey song my System of a Down, the more I like it. I'm not quite sure what it is about it, but I do love the loud fast crap mixed with a slower melodic tune *shrug*. Yeah, I'm weird. No, I won't go away.
