intake question...

what i mean by difference is. the first one is short. and the second one.(yellow) is long..if i was to install a short one. would i remove the resonator box? or leave it..which is better?short or long?

first intake is a short ram intake the second is a cold air intake or CAI for short. the CAI will give better performance but will cost more. when installing an intake you have to take out all stock air box and intake parts. i installed an AEM CAI on my car it took about 1.5 hours i had to jack up the car remove a tire and remove the splash guard in order to take out the stock intake parts and that was the hardest part. some sites say you need to take off your front bumper to install but i didn't have to i have a 98 civic ex.

I would suggest removing the resonator box if you install the shorty or the CAI. It's just extra weight and you don't need it anymore.

The shorty intake is also safer in design against sucking in water. If you are new to aftermarket parts this might be better for you at the moment. Cause one bad puddle with the CAI and you can suck in water and destroy your engine - BAD! The shorty intake might net you 1-5hp.

The CAI since it's outside the engine bay should get colder air which is denser with oxygen which your engine needs for power. A typical CAI will get you 3-8hp. But you also risk hydrolocking your engine with water.

you take out everything from the stock setup and the new intake connects to the intake manifold.

I was just thinking: since the CAI takes in cold air by having the filter away from the engine, wouldn't it be sensible for those who have short ram intakes to make an opening in the hood, above the filter itself, to draw in the same cold air?

If you have a motor that redlines higher than most civic motors, such as at 9,000 RPMs I would recommend getting a short ram. It's been proven that the CAI stops producing sufficient power after 7,000 RPMs and that's where the short ram intake is better than the CAI. But if you're runnin' the everyday civic like most people then the CAi would be better for power, but like said above there's a chance you can suck in some water. I read somewhere that you won't suck up enough water to hurt anything unless you submerge the whole filter under water. And of course that's pretty hard to do unless you like driving through ponds.
And yes Milliardo, you would get better cold air flow if you had a hood scoop that led right into the filter, but people with hood scoops get made fun of. :D

Yea, I was about to say what Kicker said...If you're going to be revving really high, the short ram would be more beneficial in the higher RPMs. And you COULD make a hole in the hood but it'd be difficult because you'd have to have some way of keeping water OUT. And not to mention that you'd have a hideous looking HOLE in the middle of your hood. The cost of making the "intake hole" aesthetically pleasing would probably outweight the extra cost of a real CAI by far.

theres a guy with an old gti around here with a square hole cut in his with tin painted white and shaped like an overhang kinda that is over it, im sure it works good but it looks like ass

Heh, I'll take the bad comments and just concentrate on the gains of having an opening on the hood for the short ram. If the opening is designed well, it could be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional at the same time.

so you would rather have people and mostly everyone not like your car for like 2 hp?

Well, tastes differ. Might not exactly be to everyone's liking, but that's not about to worry me. And 2 hp is still 2 hp--not much, but still an addition. :D

Why not just get a CAI and earn the 2 hp that way instead of cutting what will most likely end up an ugly hole in the middle of your hood?

oh yea and what about when you gonna go sell the car and you cant sell it because of the ugly ass hole in your hood

CAI--not practical here, with floods during the rainy season. As for selling it...well, I think that's still a good 5-7 years down the road. Hopefully.
