i think the 96 gs 1.6 liter double ove head cam (dohc0 HAS AROUND 110 HP. doesnt sound like a lot. but speed and quickness is all based on a weight/hp or torque ratio, and this is a light ass car. adding 10 hp to this car is like adding 35 to a trans am for instance. so it is relatively fast stock, but with any mods can be fast as f &%#

first gs = v6 and it's 130 hp
in the rs (4 cyl) there's 2 versions.the sohc and dohc..the sohc has about 95hp and dohc has 105 hp..these car are not fast but they can be for little money.....i.e. throw 2000$ in your gs and you can have at least 200hp (klze engine swap) we all think that the mx3 is a light car but it's heavier than we think...no sure but i think the curb weight is 2400 pounds...I sure have a lot of fun with with mine tho

You're right about the curb weight, but I think the horse power on the GS v6 DOHC is more like 125-130. I might be wrong though. Mine has 120, and it has 253,000 miles on it without a rebuild.

good going...I've seen mx3 with pass 300 000km on them and still going..they're tough engines...i just sold my old k8 engine and had 145000km on it and was running like a new one..it also depends on how well you take care of it (i.e. changing oil/filter tune up)..

I change the oil every 3000 miles, (I don't know how many km that is) but it is starting to feel like I'm losing horse power. I'm thinking about doing the KL-ZE 2.5L swap, but I don't want to spend too much money on it because it has so many miles. I don't know what I'm going to do about it.

The curb weight on a 92 MX-3 GS, which I have, weighs like 4lbs ligher than the new RX-8... it's 2995lbs.. if I do remember, the my engine puts out 130hp and 115 ft/lb of torque. the MX is better than the civic... the only car durring that time which had more HP is a Nissan NX, which has 140hp... they aren't too bad, and quite rare.. i've seen some pretty sweet NXs but they are few and and far between and good luck finding one in good condition. other cars in the same class which and possibible to check out are: the Paseo (Toyota), NX (Nissan), CRX or Civic SI models only (Honda). all handle diffrently.. but find the one you like the best. *note* most EG-6 year model civics without the SI tag have SOHC engines which put out less than 100hp... it's about equal to driving an Eight-Five (1985-1987 Toyota corolla/toreno base model) ... the better version of the corolla is the Eight-Six (1985-1987 GTS model) which has a 128hp and 110 ft/lb of torque... and it's the last FR model.. if you want to be driftin it's a good alternative.

so about how much would a klze swap cost?

babybluemx3
06-04-2004, 07:52 AM
it again depends..are you dropping the engine in...areyou doing a basic swap (meaning you don't replace ANY parts)...You have to be more specify...it can range from 1000 to 3000.....mine was more like 2500 because it was not a basic swap..I put some goodies on the engine before dropping the engine ;)

yeah i waz thinkin of just doing a basic and when i got more money start puttin other things in there

you may as well do it all at once, that way you know you did the job right from the start... Thats what Im doing anyways, working my ass off this summer and buying parts.. then Im gonna do it in Winter... I think that is the better choice IMO.

pimpologist101

where are you going to get yours

bmwm3guy
06-04-2004, 01:22 PM
I dont know yet, right now I am buying all the parts for it because the price of engines are way too expensive during the summer months. All I have left to buy are headers (which I might not due to fitting problems), rims, and a full 2.5" exhaust.

Im gonna shop around in late fall and see what I can get. there might also be a Group buy maybe this winter in my area. Where are you from?

i went to flashoptions.com and they got 2497cc (2.5L) DOHC Horse Power: 200hp Compression Ratio: 10.0 -- Engine-Trans-Intake-ExhaustManifold-Mounting for $500 but i dont know if they are reliable

bmwm3guy

...for 500$ thats almost too good to be true.. watch out on that one.

isn't it used? although I guess all KLZEs are used huh. well, there's only one way to find out, buy it. There is a way of beating a scam. If you ask to pay for it via secure method, (some method that can be traced), and they decline, then you know that they aren't honest!

bmwm3guy
06-08-2004, 07:27 PM
unless, they're in a different country... Ive heard of those scams before. However I would think you would have some legal recourse if it were bough in North America...

What happens is you send the money, and you never get the stuff... and there is nothing you can do. : / watch out dude

I took off the curved part of the intake before the airbox, it gave me some more HP, and the engine runs cooler...1st and 2nd gear pulls alot harder now! and 3rd-5th are even faster... it'll give you some more HP till you get the KLZE

mx3man
06-25-2004, 07:48 AM
...I dont see how that will give you more horsepower, nor make your engine runnoticeably cooler. Even if it was you're only gaining 3-4HP if you're really lucky.

I would replace the air-box for a cold-air intake setup and the new air filter will allow a bit more flow, and this way you will be able to route the air filter behind your headlight and get some cooler air.

My next project will be to cut a bigger hole in the metal located behind the headlight to allow more air to the filter. It is just a little tricky to get at unless the engine is out.

or take off the bumper..that's what I did..I cut a 6-7" diameter hole...

I'm doin that... and gettin a EVO body style front bumper... so I get a ram air setup... yea!!!... but to get all that will cost $600+ US.
