i was leaning towards the pioneer 8400 myself but i currently have a panasonic 602 model and i love the solid blue screen and wanted the pioneer for the 4 volt pre outs but now i see the new panasonic dfx983u. this unit plays mp3 wma and has 5 volts pre out. the price is around the same and i get to have the all blue screen. i am stuck between these two now. if any body has some info about the piioneer that would be nice to hear about it. thanks

I am not saying don't buy a new head unit ... but don't do it for those two reasons

well i know the color thing isnot a performance thing but thats what i want from my cd player, i currently have 2.2 v from my jacks and the sound could be clearer, so would the 5 v give me sound thats more crisp or what ever the word describing it should be?

im just hoping it will help. ive done everything but switch hu's. i want a new one anyways. and im hoping from what others said, stepping from 2.2v to 5v outs will help. not to mention, bottom line, aiwa probably isnt one of the best brands. and it skips over every bump.

if it skips, yank it ..... I find that the most irritating of all. The extra voltage will generally help you with rejecting alternator noise.

great, thanks. my mind is set then. but do you know offhand which brands or receivers have an antishock? the only receiver ive seen with it is the sony cdx-mp70
http://distinctivesounds.com/cgi-bin/image/templates/SonyCDX-MP70.jpg
which is nice looking, but i cant find anywhere what voltage outs it has. would you happen to know if theres a sony standard or what it is for this one?

is there a big difference between a 4 and 5v out? should i pick one receiver over another because of the output voltage? theres a couple i like, but the panasonic is the only with a 5v, all the rest are 4v.

ditto, i was looking through the entire crutchfield mag, and the panasonic is my favorite, it doesnt cost $1,000, and it still has a good set of features. i think yours is the exact same, except i want the added mp3 playback and 5v outs. and of course you gotta love the silver and blue, looks damn nice.

well, the Sony site was not of much help, here is their entry

cdx-mp70 (http://www.xplodsony.com/products/default.asp?MD=cdx-mp70&submit=Go)

it doesn't say either.

As for output voltages, it means very little between 4 and 5 volts

i emailed them asking about the voltage, i probably wont get a response though.
ive decided on one of two receivers. either the panasonic cq-dfx972u or the pioneer deh-p8400mp. have you heard pros or cons about either of them?

i would go with the pioneer. I think they are the best (my opinion)

i saw that one too in the new crutchfield catalogue they sent me. ill see which one i can get cheaper. the only difference is the new model plays wma files, which i dont care about... i encode everything with xingmp3 anyways.

although according to the pioneer site, that receiver has an "anti-shock mechanism", so im leaning towards that one.

I like Alpines because they almost never skip. It kinda makes the anti-skip circuit kinda pointless. But I have to admit, the newer Alpines are not that aesthetic (pretty).

true, although i like the 7897 with the fantomface. nice feature, but thats not enough to sell me on it. cause like you said, theyre ugly. im going mostly for looks, since i dont care about added features, since most are standard everywher. all the good or expensive receivers have at least 4v outs and play mp3's, so after that all i need it a good looking face.
