How high do these engines rev too? and do the Shut down when the RPMs get too high?

Well it depends on the engine but they mostly go over 7000 rpm. And i can't wait 'till they introduce the airpressure controled valves (like in a F1 engine) then they'll shure go over the 10k mark:D

My friend told me the rev up to 12-13k:)

Mazda's RX-Evolve does 12,000 rpm I think. It is defiantely over 10,000.

Actully you are all wrong. The rotors themself, when the tach reads 9,000 RPM, are turning 18,000 RPM. in one of the issues of Super Street, they explained the rotary engines and they are geared down 3:1 at the output shaft so while the tach says one thing, the rotors are going three times faster.

That's right. For every 90degrees the rotors turn the shaft turns 30 degrees...so, when the Tach says 9K, its actually doing 27,000! Incredible!

That's pretty cool. I learned something new today.

Wow I never new that, But do the shut off if the revs are too high? Cause I originally didn't belive him cause he said that the boxster had a V8 and did over 200 and the only way to do a burn out on a bike is with bleach:)

enzo@af

Yeah, sounds like an idiot. I would assume that they wouldn't shut off. But, I wouldn't run one too high...

I dont think they have a limiter but i wouldnt rev them too high. Also i think that they are damaged more by over-heating but im not sure.

WOW....Wouldnt want one to fly apart at top revs:eek:

We had a xmass party at a engine shop and had to bet how long would a rotary last for at full noise. Well it reved like a jet engine and then it flew apart, bits every where. BTW Psman32 & enzo the rotor does one turn to three output shaft turns, the rotors have a lot of wieght in them about 14 pounds so you don't want to spin them to fast. Less work to overhaul a rotary engine than a piston one. The quickest way to kill a rotary is to trash it when it's cold you got to warm them up before the big rev. Got a mpeg of a RX7 doing a burn out and blowing the motor
and the hood off.

Is that the photo from the Rotary &4's National's ???
If it is, that is one great photo of a rotary shitting itself big time !!!

Yep it's a short video of it. The smoke, flames and the auto hood release.

yea i have always loved rotaries, Mainly because they can make so much power with so little displacement, the rx-7 has 1.3 liter displacement, considering thosee engines have been to 600hp thas alot of hp/liter.

hey GTO, where can you get that vid?

enzo@af

I thought that the RX-7's rotors were roughly 11 lbs? Maybe I'm wrong, but 14 lbs sounds too high. I know Racing beat makes lightened rotors that range from about 8.2 to 9.7, so 14 sounds awfully high.

The main problem was overheating caused throug burning a bit of oil. So if you didn't used good oil or didn't replaced it often enough, you had from time to time sedimentations which caused again more friction -> overheating. but now with the new renesis this should be over:)
the old 13G engine from mazda could rev up to 9500 on the tach(red section started at 8500):bandit:

I have had many RX-7s and still have 3. The rotary engine is great. They can rev much higher than "pist-on" engines :D . They have a buzzer, but not a rev limiter, so if you go 1k RPM over redline on stock internals, bye bye engine (not that its happened to me).

Some helicopters and small airplanes use rotary engines, in operation they will be running in the 4.5k-6k range, in time of flight.

Hello! Where did all the rotary fans go?

Keep the rotary spirits high and alive!!!

Anyway, another reason is I wanna know what are the mod setup u guys have for your RX-7s because I need some idea and tips for street racing and street legal drag racing to improve performance on my RX-7s. The setups must not sacrifice either one of them: acceleration, mid-range power and top end.

Also, please state IYO the best parts u ever tried and tested on your RX-7.

Cheers ppl

I'm still a rotary fan but it's too friggin expensive here so I bought an S13 (1.8 Turbo) and will mod it when some money's around. Nevertheless the dream about a 20B driven FD is still alive but maybe when I'm older an got a good working business.

Well nice 2 see ya again...anyway, RPS13 has the looks and a drift car just like FC3S. Plus, The SR20DET is the best inline4 in Nissan catalogue of performance engines. A real gem. Good choice man :)

But im planning on buying a reman. TII engine and popping it into my car, i just gotta find a cheap used intercooler and TII tranny. and im not getting the hood scoop. noooo my freind. Wolf in sheeps clothing, hehe.
