1993 Cavalier cuts off when driving HELP!

I have a 93 Cavalier (2.2L ?) 5 speed stick shift with 140000 miles on it and it runs fine but just quits when driving down the road. I depress the clutch and crank it up again and on we go... and can someone tell me why they go through alternators?:(
