Quizzz: it's not Import but look like a Garage kit, not Muscle car but american, it has no 19' rims but 16', it is not lowered but could be???

Answer: it's a Teardrop Trailer.

Here is the link to real ones http://www.desertteardrops.com/window.html
Check the customer's TD's, you will certainly find one looking like mine.

It's a project I began 3 months ago, just to change of all the bodywork and lowering I've recently done. I wanted to do something "Vintage".

I took all informations on the Td's site and prepare my own plans. It will be 1/24 scale.

Here are the first pieces I prepared for the work:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/108719xavhuy-pieces.jpg
It's made of different thikness of Evergreen Plasticard and square profiles. Other pieces come from an 1/24 Tamiya 1966 Beetle.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/889565xavhuy-amortos.jpg
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/272636xavhuy-ailes.jpg
The chassis:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/384001xavhuy-chassis.jpg
With the floor on:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/533883xavhuy-floor.jpg
The first step of building, only buddies, no glue.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/680318xavhuy-firstblanc.jpg
And the Hasegawa 1966 Beetle that will pull the trailer.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/558506xavhuy-67gall.jpg
The roof support comes from a Gunze "ovale window" Beetle.
These are the first plans I prepared for the backside kitchen.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/961360xavhuy-traces-cuisine.jpg
The kitchen, done of Evergreen plasticard ,printed pattern on paper and fine sheet of wood.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/494880xavhuy-cuisine1.jpg
The kitchen included between sides (painted and glued).
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/787809xavhuy-cuisine2.jpg
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/367380xavhuy-cuisine3.jpg
Scratchbuilding of the front wheels, I used a wheel from an 1/48 plane.
The chassis is now painted and have received a "dry-brush" of metalic color ( Humbrol 56 ).
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/760597xavhuy-jockey.jpg
The round profiles I glued to harden the sides.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/295775xavhuy-renforts.jpg
And the begining of closing the roof with a thik sheet of aluminium
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/714934xavhuy-roofopen.jpg
And what it will loke like once closed. With my big fingers.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/421064xavhuy-roofclosed.jpg
A last pic of the rear kitchen.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/133926xavhuy-cuisine4.jpg
I had problems with the glue (superglue gel) and my sheet of aluminium was disformed. I had then to glue another one on the first but with liquid superglue now.
The side window is now finished and glued, as well for the door and it's window.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/969618xavhuy-newside.jpg
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/195464xavhuy-newdoor.jpg
I've also prepared the chain and wire that will be added on the chassis ( between the car and the trailer).
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/150343xavhuy-elect.jpg
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/451073xavhuy-chaine.jpg

That's where I am for now. My next step will be the curved rear door and finishing the wheel arches.
I hope it wasn't too boring ;) , I've certainly forgotten some informations and will probably have to "edit and refresh" this thread shortly. I know that it changes of all you can see on this forum but hope you've liked it.

That's excellent, very well built.

You should make out your own 1/24 plans to sell. I'm sure they will be a hit with modelers into classic american cars.

Thanks for all your comments, I try to do my best.

To Bigfrit:
These thin sheets of aluminium are used for offset printing. I didn't bought it , a member of my Modeling Club gave it to me. I don't know where you could buy some in Belgium, sorry.

To Flyonthewall:
When the TD is finished, I'll prepare a .pdf tutorial like you did for the intercooler. It will be downloadable from my Modeling Club website.
But the site is not yet begun, I'm better in modeling than in webpages building.

This project takes all my time of club meetings then be patient the end is near, more progress pics soon.

 Excellent!

The trailer+car is just begging to be put into a diorama.

deedlit
01-17-2003, 03:55 AM
You're right Focus2000, the TD+VW will be on a diorama. The theme will be the side of a Californian road, with Mr and Mrs having a break.

I have lots of stuff to prepare for this Diorama:
- open the right door of the Beetle
- on the roof support: Coca-Cola cool box, Empi-parts box.
- behind the trailer: camping table and chairs, bread , bootles, glasses and the twoo figures.

Won't be finished for march, I have a great contest in Belgium in March in Jabbeke (Gent) called "On the road" ( for the belgian and dutch modellers) and I think I'll put it in the "Scratch category" not yet in the "Diorama category".

Hi all,

Sorry for the late updates to my project but I haven't a lot of time to complete my thread. :o
I know that I'm a slow modeler but here is the latest progress.

I stopped working on the trailer, I have problems to realise the rear door and my motivation needs to be reoriented on a CAR.
So, I've begun the 1967 Hasegawa Beetle.
Sorry for the crappy pics, I can't fix the macro mode.

I cut the passenger door and the door panel to.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/347086xavhuy-portecoupe.jpg
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/371864xavhuy-panneaucoupe.jpg

Chassis is finished
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/943323xavhuy-plancherfinal.jpg

I detailed the bottom of the seats. Created a frame under the seats with piano strings and the swinging armature.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/674170xavhuy-deuxsieges.jpg

Here is a pic of a real seat to show you how it should look.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/357412xavhuy-armaturesieges.jpg

Chassis with seats on (seats unpainted , fixed with buddies)
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/126736xavhuy-planchersieges.jpg

Behind rear seat I created a strap with PE-parts. This strap is hooked to keep the seat "open".
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/731524xavhuy-arrbanquette.jpg

I've scratchbuilt the hook for the trailer.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/913982xavhuy-attremorque.jpg

Here is the plan I used to create it.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/814067xavhuy-planremorque.jpg

And how the beetle looks now.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/794872xavhuy-coxablanc.jpg

I've still so much work to do, I become a bit discouraged :( .
Still doors, panels, dashboard to finish. Don't hope progress pics soon , I don't know when I'll continue on this one.

Give me some motivation, and it' ll be finished before Xmas 2004. :D

Comments are welcome.

WOW ! thanks man , for sharing !

I definetively love what you're doing to the beetle (is it better then the tamiya model btw)

You really did a great job , right down to the tiny details !
The photo-etched parts and the seat details are a welcome addition! Fabulous!
Only I m a bit  about the pic of the hook of the trailer is a bit blurry, but I m sure it's a very accurate replica of the original !
Is that the definetive colour or just the colour of the bare plastic? ?
Do I have to add I really like this progress ?

Keep up the good work and maybe we will see a nice finished model by ... november 2004 ? ;)

I kinda like it!

Hi and tanks for your replys.

The beetle will exactly be like this one:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/603265xavhuy-cox67.jpg

The wheel arches of the trailer will be blue too . Like on the Beetle.

About comparison: I have the two kits at home, I sincerely prefer the Tamiya one but when I began on it I had'nt bought it yet.
Tamiya: opening trunk, engine, better interior details (dashboard, ...),...
BUT
Hasegawa is more accurate on the general shape of the car, Tamiya looks more like a 1303.

Hi all,

during my holidays I haven't only worked on the Golf III. I also worked on the beetle and the trailer.

Everybody like pics, I give you pics.

I have nearly finished the dashboard. There is just some BMF to put on the dashboard and steeringwheel. I also have to put the decals.

To Camber: I use Tamiya White fine primer. It works great.

HI all,

because of the high temperatures , I haven't done a lot recently.
But Friday, I tried to change my mind (after the death of my friend) and worked a bit. I've just worked on the dashboard.
I've put BMf on ( BIG Thanks to Zelijko Segin aka hrmodeler for the BMF he sent me), decals are on too. I've put a little drop of clear in the speedometer and fuel gauge ( to represent the glass ).

Hi guys,

I've worked a bit recently. During my latest show I was so bored that I decided to paint the 'white' parts of my seats and door panels. I used oil paints (winsor&newton) , mixed two or three different colours to have a kind of beige.
It took me 6 hours to achieve. After lights and shadows, here is how it looks now:
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-pandr.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-pandr2.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-panga.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-banquette.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-frontseat.jpg

The pics don't do it justice, the 'used' effect is more visible in real.

Next show, still 6 hours to work on, and the grey-blue primer will be replaced by grey-blue oil paint.

The wheel arches ( from a Tamiya Beetle ) are now painted, polished and glued on the teardrops.

http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-archga2.jpg

Stay tuned

Hi all,

thanks for your comments and support.

Last w-e I was in a show so I had a lot of time to spend. So I painted all the blue parts of the seats and doorpanels.

I made step-by-step pics to explain on another forum my technique of oil paints. I always paint my interiors with oil paints , like Winsor&Newton, to give it a used or leather look.
I'll also explain you. :-)

1° Preparing the parts
----------------------
I've put all the parts on handles to easily hold them. The panels are visible in the previous pics, they were held on a card with bluetac.
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint1.jpg

2° Preparing the paint-mix
-------------------------
With oil paints, more you mix paints more your paint will be mat :screwy: (hoop you understand).
Here are the 4 colours I used.
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint2.jpg

Here is my stock of oil tubes.
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint3.jpg

And here is the mix I did. I added just a small part of red and 'crimson' to keep my colour blue.
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint4.jpg

3° Painting the first coat
-------------------------
With a soft brush, paint all the primered parts. The part MUST be painted with a coloured mat coat first. This first coat will 'hold' the oil on the parts. Here, all my parts were primered with Valejo acrylics (airbrushed).
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint5.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint6.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint7.jpg
There are still some brushmarks in the paint, but don't worry, those will be removed in the next steps.

Let the parts to 'dry' for +/- 20 minutes. This delay will help the oil to 'attach' the base coat.

4° Removing the excess paint
----------------------------
With another large/flat/soft brush, carefully pass it on the fresh paint. Each time, wipe your brush on paper to remove the paint from your brush. Repeat this operation as long as the paint is not clean. The base coat will also appear through your oil paint.
I hoop you can see it in the pics.
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint8.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint9.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint10.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint11.jpg
And the paper after all the wiping.
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint12.jpg

5° Lights
---------
Take a new soft/large/flat/clean ( :screwy: :evillol: ) brush , take some white oil paint with this brush and wipe it on paper. Like if you did a drybrush. Remove all the paint from your brush, even if you think there is no more paint in it there is always enough to make your drybrush.

Slowly pass this brush on all the edges, perpendiculary to the parts to avoid putting white in the hollows. The blue is still 'fresh' so the white will mix with the blue and lighten the edges.
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint13.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-paint14.jpg

6° Shadows
-----------
Mix some black oil with your paint. Take a fine brush and put some dark mix in the hollows. Take a flat brush and 'push' the dark in the hollow. It will automatically mix the dark with the blue.

Thats all for the basic steps. I hope you're not too bored.

The oil paint takes 3 days to dry so you can still make lights and shadows the day after.

Now, I only have to paint the fine line of the seats with white, and put some BMf on the panels accesories. And the interior will be finished.

I also bought some accesories during this show.
Some hinges, basicaly for RC boats but they will be placed on my beetle's door.

EMAXX: pfft...you don't like VW!! :loser: Is Subaru better?!! (j/k)

I never really liked VW. Thats just me. I personally think Subaru is better, but there are a lot of people that would argue that. My favorite car company is Barvarian Motor Works (BMW). Thats just me. Someone else's favorite car may be the Volkswagon Bettle. I'm not knocking VW, just voicingmy opinion.

Dang that looks good. I just don't have the patience to paint like that. lol

I agree....looks real good deedlit. But I do have a slight question for you. Why a beetle and not the VW van, or something like that?

In a van you can sleep in it and not in a beetle (you can do it but it won't be very comfortable).
So, it's why I added my caravan behind the beetle.

I adore this project. It's got that great blend of skill, talent, inspiration, uniqueness; it's a beauty! I cannot wait to see this little model done. It's gonna rock.

Man, there are some really great builders around here. The only thing that disappoints is that they update their projects so infrequently... it's almost like they're bulding slowly and taking their time to make a superior model....

Oh.

Thanks all for your comments :bigthumb:

To Willimo:
I know, I'm very slow. I don't have time at home to build so I only do it during our club meetings and during shows.
But you are right, why hurry up? The best way to make great models is to take the time. A modeler must be patient. If not , stop modeling.

Take a look at this french thread about my teardrops:Here (http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=17038&forum=3&54)
Look at the first post: 6 september 2002
More than a year and it's still not finished.

I'll finish with these wise words:
The most important is quality not quantity.

Fabulous! another update!

and what sort of update, man deedlit, you're up there with the pro-model-builders!

Love the explanation of painting with the oil-painting, and luckily I know a friend who likes to do real paintings, so I could atleast try it !
No sure if I could get the same good results, mais bon!

Merci for keeping the thread and project alive, mate!

ciao et a+

One of the projects that really deserves a long time build!!!
The scratchbuild trailer is out of this world wit quality better than if it was an original kit...

As for the oil paints 'trick' reminds me back in the dieacst days that I used same water based mixed paints over the original paint to get a great/mat/worn leather look it's almost the same thing but oil paints mix better and are far more 'durable'

Just one small question...the hinges can be bought from a store online???

Thanks for all your comments guys.

To Mythos GR:
It must certainly be found online. In my pics you have all the informations needed: brand, reference, size, ... and the price.
9.80 is in €. Try a search on the RC kits websites.

Hi all,

as you can see in my sig, this project should be 'on hold' BUT modeling is like a drug. You never really stop modeling :evillol: .

So I played a bit with some BMF and did all the door-accesories.

http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-nov2.jpg
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-nov3.jpg

I passed some compound and polish (both Tamiya) on the passenger door and also chromed the parts with BMF.
http://www.flat4ever.com/modules/newbb/pics/xavhuy-nov4.jpg

I had painted the body with arctic white (automotive paint) and after masking the sides I painted the body baby blue (automotive paints too).
I have already begun the compound and polish stage but I have still lots of areas to do.
I have all the chrome parts to do with BMf and also have to apply black chrome BMF on the arches joints.

And here is how looks the interior right now. The thin line around the seats still needs to be painted white.

That's all for now.

Hope you still appreciate my work.

After "Nike, juste fais-le!", there will be "Nice, just Deedlit!"...:smokin::evillol:
But it's not new, apparently your work is appreciated in many places!...;) (n'est-ce pas?...)
Take your time, guy, all the time you want: pleasure is better when longer! :iceslolan:icon16::p For you and for us!

Thank you for sharing such a great work! It's really worth the time spent!

Thanks Bonnot (sorry I don't know your real name).

You have certainly seen my thread on flat4ever.com and it's very appreciated there.
Flat4ever and Af are my favorite forums, I like to share my work with other people to hear their advices, comments or critics. Also during shows, master modelers from other clubs come to see my work and I'm kissing their feet when they say they like it. For me it's not so beatiful, I have probably another look at my work.
It's my first scratch model, so there are probably some mistakes but next one will be better.
All I need now to finish this project is a bit of time and a lot of motivation and courage because I'm in a kind of modeling block and haven't touched a brush for 3 months.
