The new WRX Sti is awesome!!!!! The North American model has a 2.5 turbocharged engine with 300 HP and 300 ft pound of torque. It also has lots of goodies added to it :sun:
Does anyone know how much this would cost?

I just don't get it. Why change the Impreza body style so drastically when the WRX style debuted only a few years ago. Yes, this is a very nice car, but why go and change such a good thing???

My dealer is charging $3500 over MSRP (whatever msrp ends up being). I'm hoping to pay close to $35k after taxes, etc.

No, and neither are the dealers. Figure a mildly equipped WRX is about $29k after tax/title/etc though. MSRP of an STi might be under $30k, but that doesn't mean you'll pay anywhere near that price.

Those bug eyes were NOT ugly at all. They were a very popular and attractive style. The new ones are nice and will be popular, but I don't like them nearly as much.

Uncle, I just found out about the R35 GT-R. THAT ISA FINE MACHINE, and it'll make the STi look stupid as well (no offence). Anyway, I'm rethinking this, I think I'll save the money for the GT-R and just take my parents Maxima (it's an 02, I'll get it for free). I figure I could afford the GT-R by college, maybe a little later. And yeah, I'm just about 16, turning in a few months.

you say you're 14...
able to afford a gt-r by college?
those are about 80k US if you can get one...
for an r34...
if you go older, they're still about 50k.
www.motorex.net
all sube's are designed for off road usage...
the wrx and sti are based on rally cars, which, of course... go off road...
the suspension on the wrx and the upcoming wrx sti are both capable of off roading, not necessarily like a truck... but off road
only off road vehicles in the US are hummer and land rover?
hummer (humvee's, the h1) are it... the h2 is a rebodied suburban.
the off road capability of alot of US built trucks and suv's is at least that of the land rover and h2.
what about the 4wd trucks from chevy/ford/dodge... or jeep?
hmm..

Open your owners manual much? WRX says it's NOT INTENDED FOR OFFROAD USE. So does about every SUV. Not only will driving offroad (if it can be proven) void your warranty 9 times out of 10, but it will wear your suspension out in a heartbeat. Guess you never wondered why world rally cars rebuild almost the entire vehicle after EVERY race. :-/
Yeah Imprezas are modelled after rally cars... that doesn't mean something any schmoe can go buy for $25k is gonna hold up to 1/16th the abuse put into a car that has millions put into it.

a 4wd suv or truck not intended for off road use?
right...
i'm aware that you'd void your warranty... it wouldn't be covered anymore than drag racing your vette and breaking something would.
just b/c you manual says it's not intended does that mean that it won't do it?
that's a bit too literal of an interpretation.
i'm well aware that it's extra strain. just like taking your car to the strip or to a road course.
either of these events would void your warranty if you break it... right?
we still do it... yes?
and to satisfy my curiousity, do you have a pic of this statement from a manual?

I've taken my 4WD fullsize blazer offroad before... was about as fun as driving a go-kart over potholes. Sure it can be done, but it's OBVIOUS the vehicle wasn't designed for it. Cars/trucks are sold to people based on the concept that you drive it on a street, not with ultimate usability offroad in mind. Don't know how many other ways I can say it.

much appreciated...
driving a vehicle off road isn't really something that's supposed to have a smooth ride..
you would mod a suspension for offroad just like you would to drop your car to handle better...
manufacturers know that a vehicle most likely won't go off road, but from the vehicles i've seen go off road, with nothing more than a set of big knobbies and wheels... the guys i work with have enough fun with stock 4wd trucks
i know what you're saying... but still...
it doesn't mean you can't do it. and it doesn't mean it won't be able to handle it.

the sti 2.5 is a purpose built motor, not a reworked wrx 2.0 or the rs's 2.5. it was developed for the sti specifically.
LjasonL
03-08-2003, 01:26 AM
the wrx is a homologation car, meaning subaru built it to homologate the car for rally use. so in effect, it is designed for rallying or "off road use"
UncleMeat777
03-08-2003, 09:03 AM
I'm sorry but if you people really think you're going to drive around off road and have it be anything close to a rally car or true off-road vehicle, you're a bunch of dumbasses. WRX tires barely have traction on pavement, you would just spin them on dirt, the suspension would be destoroyed after about a day... the open differentials would give you even less traction.
Yes the car is rally "inspired" meaning it's the same basic engine design as the rally cars. Same basic body style, same basic turn radius, stiff sporty suspension, etc etc. THat doesn't mean it's a million dollar dirt/snow machine. It's a great car, but no rally car.
But hey, it's your $25k, waste it as you see fit.
Now I remember why I don't post here much. :flash:

i didn't say you could take it rallying out of the box...
the wrx is not "inspired" by the rally car, it IS the rally car. it is designed specifically for rally racing, then "toned down" to make a cheap, street version that can be sold to homologate the car for WRC competition. just because it's toned down, doesn't change the fact that it was designed to be a competitive rally racer. if you think you have to drop half a million dollars to make a rally car, you need to look at amatuer rally racing. people race - and win - in cars worth less than $10,000.
as far as open differentials go, you know the STi (the car we're talking about here) has a mechanical limited slip rear, driver adjustable center, and suretrac front differential, right?

Yeah the new STI looks great really nice. Whoever thinks you can rally right out of the box is a dumbass maybe do minor off-roading but thats it. You need to mod it like a roll cage and new suspension. Tires suck so you need new ones. You need many mods to make this as good as a rally car. The Prodrive WRC WRX STI's new are over $1 million. $95k on the transmission alone

For a decent rally rig, come on how much can it be? You need new tires, some underbody protection, and beefier suspension stuff. Other than that what do you need for a decent, not WRC quality, rally car?

ever heard of scca pro rally?
there's production classes there as well that limit your mods.
you can rally any car my friends, any.
the wrx is no exception.
if you're talking about a car being rallied, this entire thread is based on the wrx sti. not the wrx.
and besides, the car is designed to have good handling with the wheels spinning.
you think that rally cars have traction when flying on ice or gravel? no. it's just controlled wheelspin.
which is why you've got 4 wd.

that spoiler is over kill for a wrx unless it's jun's track attack car with 500+ hp. sorry... it's a bit much for anything with less than 300hp to the wheels and a top speed of 150+....

it's a beutiful car, you get everything you want, except a high horsepower killing v8 machine engine that you have to find of course,22b from a 98 scooby sti will work.
