I just ordered one from HLJ, and it's the only thing on backorder in my shipment. I'm kind of worried too because the other two are Gundam kits, which (from what I read) are "Spot" production items and if HLJ goes out of stock on them, then they might not get them in for a long time.

On the other hand, I imagine these gundam markers are quite popular, and HLJ shouldn't have any problems getting restocked fast.

No, Im just in a Pissed off mood. Dont take my responce the wrong way. I believe Gundams are backordered at HLJ.com but they are available at Sunentertanment.com and they are in the U.S.

gundam kits are never out of production. They're usually produced once a year for the older kits, and more often for the new releases.

if it's out of stock, u can try e-mail rainbowten to see when the kit is going to be produced again.

well thats good to know. i'll try the one from hobby search. do you happen to know the difference between the gm20 and the gm10. two different blacks :confused:

Bandai manufactures them generally about once per year, so availability just depends on the season.


I don't want to be caught out of that one-year production cycle. :)

magicman, get the GM1 as it's fine tipped for panel lines. The only difference between GM10 and GM20 is GM20 is "soft chip" whatever that means, I assume the color is the same just the tips are different.

thanks, hobby search is out of the gm20 so i can only buy the gm10. thanks again :D

dagger, which gundam kits are you getting?

you gys can always try technical or drafting pens from a art supply shop
or sakura pigment liners. I believe u can get them in finer tips than the gundam markers, and would probably work better. There's been alot of talk about recent markers not working properly.

I haven't watched any Gundam episodes at all, I have a few friends who are into Gundam, they forced me into this, I swear :D

I got those two cause I thought it would be cool to have the contrasting wing types, like a devil vs. angel thing.

Personally I think ordering pens from Japan is loony when you can go to your local art supply store and get these excellent pigment markers/disposable technical pens, for anywhere from $1.50 to $2.15 each. Some office supply and craft stores sell them as well.

My favorites are the beige ones-Pigma Micron. Available in sizes from .005 up to .08, in black and other colors, also separately or in sets. Found these last week for $2.15 each at two different local art supply stores. Also found these others, the Staedtler and Itoya. The Itoya was the cheapest, the Staedtler the same price/quality as the Pigma.

Here you can see how small/precise the various tips are. The ink is very black, covers immediately.

As you can see they easily work on panel lines.

The internet is great, but I couldn't fathom ordering simple office supplies for our models all the way from Japan...they're simply too common an item. Hope this helps!

I had some .005 and .01 pens from, I think ZIG? I don't know, Guiddy recommended them in a post a long while back (back when I first came to the board, in fact). Long story short, the tip on my 0.005 quickly wore down to a nub (I don't know why?) and the ink didn't flow very well - very sporadic. Maybe it needed to be broken in...

Bob, I can certainly see how mad it would be to JUST order pens from Japan, but I'm including them in a larger shipment and it doesn't add to the shipping. They're only 200 yen each, 'bout $1.70, so why not? The more tools in my toolbox, the better. :D

ZIG's are yet another brand. These markers don't last forever, they are disposable. And if you're already making an order, that's fine-since their weight addition to the package in shipping costs would be negligible. I'm commenting more on the habit people have of sticking with only one solution, I see everyone here herding towards Gundam markers and wondering where to find them, when a common item is available locally that will work quite well. I don't even use these things for panel lines (I actually use them for pen and ink illustrations), I don't like the harsh black lines. I use thinned, custom-mixed Tamiya acrylic flats in a darker shade of the body color for a much more realistic, subtle appearance to my panel lines. Even on dark gray cars I use thinned Tamiya flat black, I don't like the panel lines shiny either.;)

Dammit.....I ordered one from HS, and it is TAKING FOREVER TO COME!!!!!!!
